Source: Spurned Cutler wants to be traded

February 28, 2009 7:30 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

The Denver Broncos may have seriously damaged their relationship with quarterback Jay Cutler.

A source close to the situation confirmed the Broncos were trying to acquire quarterback Matt Cassel from the New England Patriots by dangling Cutler, their Pro Bowl quarterback.

The trade talk infuriated Cutler, who now wants to leave the Broncos.

The source said the proposed trade was a three-way deal that would have sent Cassel to Denver to reunite with former Patriots offensive coordinator and new Denver head coach Josh McDaniels, Cutler to Tampa Bay and compensation from Tampa Bay to New England.

Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel were traded Saturday to Denver's AFC West rival Kansas City for a second-round pick.

A source close to the situation told ESPN.com that the Broncos pursued the trade because McDaniels wanted to be reunited with Cassel, who excelled under McDaniels last season as an injury replacement for Tom Brady.

In the aftermath of the trade Saturday, Cutler asked permission to find his own trade partner but was denied by the Broncos, according to the source. Cutler is still hopeful he will be traded because he feels betrayed by McDaniels, the source said.

The source said Denver is no longer interested in dealing Cutler, who made the Pro Bowl in 2008, his second full season as a starter. The source said Tampa Bay, Detroit and Chicago could be possible destinations if Cutler gets his way and is traded. The source pointed out that until Cutler heard about the trade talks Saturday, he was completely happy playing for McDaniels and being in Denver.

It may be difficult for Denver to trade Cutler now because there are no other quality quarterbacks available. It would be silly to trade him to the Lions for the No. 1 overall pick and try to draft Georgia's Matthew Stafford or USC's Mark Sanchez. Neither of those players is a known commodity, while Cutler has blossomed into one of the NFL's better quarterbacks.

Denver has to regain Cutler's trust immediately or this could turn into one of the NFL's uglier situations.

Cassel is so over rated it's ridiculous. We'll see what he can really do without superior talent around him. He's got Scott Mitchell written all over him.

I'd trade a first for Cutler any day.

What were the broncos thinking? They have a young stud qb and they try to trade him and now everything is messed up. Sounds like something stupid the Vikes would try. I would give up a couple draft picks and Sage for Cutler.

haha i think the Detroit Lions lay claim to that title, Denver could be a close second.

Detroits the biggest mess in the sporting world. Remember how bad the Chargers were the past 2 seasons until about the 9th week? The Broncos have blown it the past 2 years. Last season they could have beat the Chargers and made the play-offs, they totally screwed that whole situation up. The Lions fault was Matt Millen and the Ford family- the Broncos have problems all the way down the line.

Todd Haley is on WHB 810 right now in a press conference announcing the signing of Matt Cassell and he stated he is NOT guaranteed to be the starter right away, and he will be in competition with Tyler Thigpen. He said is the kind of coach that only plays the players that will give his team a chance to win and the starting job will have to be earned.

Tom Brady.... 50 TDS 8 INT 69 com per. 117 QB rating.

Matt Cassel.. 21 TDS 11 int 63 com per. 89 QB Rating.

T-Jack........ 9 TDS 2 int 60 com per. 95 QB rating.

You seriously lumped in T-Jack's inflated numbers with Brady and Cassel? How about a career rating of 76.5 instead?

Get real. smile

What are you guys talking about? Just pointing out the obvious that Cassel is no Tom Brady and much closer to T-Jack than you may want to believe.

Anyway $15,000,000 per year for a guy who's started one season since High-school..... good Luck KC with that one.

Do you think Belichick and the Patriots got to where there are by making bad deals?

They understand personnel and money better than any Professional Sports Franchise.

First round pics are over-rated and very risky especially with the big guaranteed money they get now. The Pats have plenty of pics and are quite good at finding and developing talent in the later Rounds "7th Brady among-st many others" thus saving TONS of money and Cap space.

It was a good sound trade for the Pats and it may turn out to be a good or great deal for the Chiefs but we'll have to wait and on that part of it to find out.

We all know first round picks have a great chance at being a dud. RE: Troy Williamson, and about 3/4ths of all Heisman winners. Thats common sense. Fact is the Chiefs got 2 players for a pretty good deal, and again comparing Cassell to TJack is a joke. Like comparing Brad Johnsons scrambling abilities to Michael Vicks

Cassells price is about right when you throw in Vrabel. He's really not a whle lot better than T-jack. Not that T-jack is a good NFL QB at this point mind you.
