mainbutter
I'm taking a 10 day trip to Peru, hitting up Urubamba and Cuzco definitely and who knows where else.Anyone fished Peru before? I've had a heck of a time finding anything about fishing opportunities down there.
traveler
Now heres a tough one:) I read a lot about this stuff, but theres very little talk in the offshore fishing community about Puru. Oops...I see you were asking about fishing in general, so probably you mean inland?? In that case, still never heard anything:) Back to offshore though...in the 50's the best marlin spot anywhere waqs Cabo Blanco, Puru. Baseball great Ted Williams caught a 1200 pound blue there, and more granders were caught off Cabo Blanco in a few years than had ever been seen anywhere. Now it's gone...the fishery that is. It's an unusual story to have someplace that great fall totally off the map, and I've never gotten the story exactly what happened, short of killing all the big breeders. It'll be interesting to see what you experience, please report back after your trip. My daughter wants me to take her to Puru for her college grad present, to see ruins and such, but if I can find any leads on fishing... JimBuck
Oh man! PEACOCK BASS if you plan on going inland fishing....A couple of Raps of various sizes and colors along with a medium-heavy rod. I've never done it but have a friend who travels for business (yeah right) all the time and is always raving about peacocks in south america. Someday I'll get to it. Cuzco is an excellent city I've heard as well.....the Mayans are a fascinating culture too if your a history buff. Good luck and let us know how it goes! mainbutter
The girlfriend is doing a health program down there where she gets to work in a hospital, go to nearby villages to do vaccinations etc, and help out with a research project(she'll even get her name somewhere in the study when it's published which is pretty [PoorWordUsage] cool for someone not yet in grad school)I'll be going down with her parents, none of them are big into fishing so it's not a sure thing I'll have the opportunity, but if we end up somewhere that has something available I'd love to take a day to do it.I won't be bringing any equipment down since it's too hard to travel with. walleye vision
If you can fish Peacocks...don't miss it. I went to Venezuela 10 years ago to fish them....AMAZING. Rapalas will not make it! You NEED big strong baits. A 5 pound peacock will break hooks and straighten split rings, no kidding. Bring heavy braid (at least 50lb power pro), stout rods and reels, and I used musky leaders. Topwater baits are your best best. Google Quest Fishing for some good info.WV
