They're a wheel that you attach line to for a deadline. When a fish pulls, there are bells inside the wheel that jingle.

They're a must have! Especially for sleeping in a permanent or for a 2nd line in a portable.

They make ones that can mount on the wall or clip on a pole, kinda like a jumper cable.

Google rattle reel. Fish house supply dot com has some. The one that I always see they should have at Fleet Farm, etc. The one I'm thinking about is made of wood.

Cabelas has them online. They're the Lindell ice rig.

I would definitely have them in my fish house, but I've already got electronic buzzers hooked up instead of bells.

One tip if you get one. Use fly line on them and tie a mono leader at the end. It keeps from tangling. We all know how the mono line can tangle when you're hand reeling them.

I use the older, smaller rattle wheels in the spearhouse (red in color). They have an arm on them and I used the 3 mounting holes on the end to mount to the ceiling above the spearhole. I use 2, one for live, one for the artificial. They are nice because they have a wing nut that tightens when you achieve your desired depth. I also use tip-up line, or black dacron on the reels. I guess an old baitcaster would work as well, but I had 8 of them from my old perm. on Mille Lacs.

Either way works I guess. I've just always used fly line. It does get expensive, but it lasts forever in this application. I think we've had some of the same line on for 15 years plus. I also know of a place to get it cheaper, so I guess that's why I've stuck with it.

Bohunk, I was referring to them more for spearing, cuz Im sick of holding my jig stick and now that I have a perm shack I wanna be hands free so I can just hold my spear ya know.

10-4. The wing nut adjusts the tension to your liking. I'm guessing you probably want to set it somewhat tight, but with some give, in case a big green sub decides to take off with your offering. Good luck in the morning, waiting to hear the report. Later.

Can a person that spears northerns, who uses a live sucker, integrate a lure into the sucker. Let's say that the northern gets real hungry, and decides to eat the decoy, can you have a hook attached to the sucker, and the line attached to a rattle real, and just catch it? I don't spear, but am curious.

No you can not use the decoy as a lure with hooks

If you are going to be using the rattle wheels in a spear house I would suggest getting the "rattlers" out of them. That little noise might not make a difference, but it just might...

In that case make your own reel with 1/4 thread bolt and a old spool and use 2 nuts to tighten it togther to your drag liking, that make since?

I have several of the bought ones both the orange plastic ones with "beads" in them and the wooden spools with dowels around the perimeter with bells inside and love them. I grew up spending all my winter weekends and holidays on Mille Lacs with my dad and grandpa and all night long we had the rattle reels down...we made them all ourselves out of plywood and dowels and some glue. They lasted for many years and worked great. I'd suggest buying one and then using it as a pattern to make your own.

I even have a couple old style dowel rods with the metal spike or pick on the end that you stab into the ice that has a rattle reel at the top. You can put it outside your fish house and you can hear the bell ring from inside if it's not too windy.

Laska,

We have used an old baitcaster reel screwed to the rafters of our fishouse above the spear hole to hold the sucker/decoy. Plus it has drag already built in. It seems that most people have an old reel laying around if you dont have any rattle wheels handy.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
