Canadian Lake of the Woods report

Recommended Posts

Well, I spent all last week hitting a few corners of the lake. Monday we walleye fished around Kenora around Mather Island. New ground for me and a couple very experienced walleye guys. Slow, 35 below, which made it tough to move. Worst day of the trip.

Tuesday we headed to Sioux Narrows for lakers and only got about 4 hours of fishing in. In those four hours, we had many hook ups and bumps. We capitalized on two trout and one whitefish. 7 and 9 pounds. Good smokers.

Thursday afternoon, I took the ice road with Otter and snowmachine in tow. Went to Oak Island. Fished Friday and Saturday in that area (Ontario) and absolutely crushed the walleyes, and got a few bonus crappies.

What a great, diverse lake! What a great week.

Been to nestor falls thousands of times, sabaskong and stevens bay areas...hay island area...the crappie fishing went down hill over the past years as far as size because of the native netting. Even walleye lakes we snow machine to are dead because of the netting...for example cedartree lake. I have no interest in the nestor falls area anymore....just my cents worth....

WallEYES,

Lets be fair and not get this topic started. Fishing pressure has alot to do with the decline in size structure too. Also it is possible that environmental changes might have happened and no one has noticed or recorded these changes. Its not just the netting man, we need to look at our selves as fishermen too.

WallEYES - If you are looking for some new water, you hould maybe try the Clearwater/Pipestone chain of lakes. There are alot of lakes in the area to fish that can be easily accessed by snowmachine. You can fish lakers, crappie, walleye, and pike. You just have to be willing to ride a short ways to access the different lakes for different species. Not as convenient as LOW, but that is why the sizes are dropping, lots of people fishing all the same areas along with the netting. If you are interested in more info, email me and I would be glad to fill you in.

Burditt is the name on alot of maps, I guess it is Ojibway for Clearwater. Alot of the lakes in the area are now supporting somehealthy sized crappies. Never heard of them around here 10 years ago and now they are popping up all over. A nice bonus for us around here. Have you ever heard of any close to the Manitou?

Sorry if I got someone upset, but it is true. I personally along with some resort owners over the years have pulled old or floating nets that are never attended, the sight of whats in there will want to make you sick....SUPERBEE..thanks for the offer, I'll take you up on that....I'm heading up to the angle real soon for a week.
