Slush Report for Morson Area

Recommended Posts

W.T.

Where are you staying. We are staying at Pelican Landing. We will likely fish Walleye one day so we may run across you. We will have six in our group. I have a green Otter, one of the other guys has a black Otterskin (Canvas Craft version) and one Blue Clam flip. Stop and introduce yourself if you see us.

Eastwind,

Just came back from Pipestone Lake last Wednesday. Still major slush in areas if you depart main trails. Lots of snow insulating the slush. Immagine its the same on LOW"s. Suggest a recon without your Otters if leaving existing well traveled trails. Trout fishing was excellent on our trip and hit the warm spell as well. Good Luck!

Thanks for the update TB,

We'll be sticking to the main trail up to Whitefish from Morson and back. Through Whitefish there are usually well traveled trails along the navigation routes, which is what we use for much of our travel. Sounds like getting off the main travel routes to some fishing spots could be dicey. Half the sleds will not be pulling Otters and we'll have a tow strap or two along.

I travelled from Sioux Narrows down to Timber Island, and encountered a little bit of slush. I was riding and not towing my otter...I guess I didn't realize how much slush I had encountered until I turned around and started heading north back to Sioux Narrows.

I guess at the end of the day, it's there, it's manageable, and if you do get stuck in it, you might have some work to do.

Thanks for the info Hemlock! From what I've been hearing, the well travelled routes are pretty well frozen. We'll have three sleds pulling flip houses and three not towing anything. The route from Morson to Whitefish is typically well traveled as is the navigation channel up through Whitefish. Just as important, how's the Laker fishing been in Whitefish? We'll be fishing Lakers on Saturday the 31st and Sunday the 1st. I've been getting up as far as the Annie Island area. Should we be going farther up for better structure?

I think the slush kept the crappie traffic down, haven't heard of any reports...

We should have a party with so many of us up there... my martini-shaped spotlight will be lit Saturday and Sunday night if anyone can find us, btw...

Trout fishing was good. Only fished for about 2 hours and iced a 7 pounder, lost one half way up, and was bumped once...so the excitement level was up in those two hours.

Another guy with me had similar results with icing a 9 lber and missing several.

That was Jan.13

Hemlock, thanks for the report. Just wondering where you took off from and where you traveled to? How were conditions, any slush troubles, etc... Also curious about the name Hemlock? I'll be up early next month hoping for eyes crappies & trout. Based out of Morson. Thant you Hemlock and all you other Morson contributers!

PS Mad Mulcher any thing to report?

We took off from the curling club in Sioux Narrows, pulling Otters and didn't go more than three miles from there. We were in Whitefish Bay, but very close to SN. I unhooked from my otter and took a rip down to my cabin (about 9 miles south of Sioux Narrows). Also, the name of our island is "Hemlock Island" hence my name...anyways, I had an awesome cross lake ride doing about 70 mph in tons of powder, or what I assumed was powder. After returning north back on my same track, it was apparent that I had opened up some slush and found a few 100 yard stretches where it grabbed me on the way back. There were several other tracks that I could've ridden on the 8 mile ride, but I found it a nicer ride breaking trail...so long story short I run the main stretch of WFB from Timber Island to Sioux Narrows with very little difficulties, and if I had taken old tracks, I probably wouldn't have found any slush.

I got back from my first LOTW ice trip in a long time. For walleyes, we ventured west out of Hanson Bay for about a 20 minute ride. Found the walleyes shallower than I thought in about 20'. Used rattle spoons and red jigs and did really well - mostly 16-17 inchers with a couple in the low 20's. The next day, we headed to Whitefish for lakers. We would locate them most of the day, but no takers. Later in the afternoon, we had a 45 minute window where we caught four and lost two. Three were in the 6-8 lb range and one was about 10 lbs. The two we lost were much bigger. First time I've fished lakers through the ice - it was a blast! Snow was pretty decent and didn't have too much of a fuss with slush. Hope to be back up in a few weeks.

How long a ride is it from Morson to say, 3 Sisters area?

It took us about an hour, but we took it pretty easy. It was my first trip by snow, so I really don't know if it was fast or slow going. It's a lot easier going over the portage in the winter!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
