Pickelfarmer
How much standing corn do you have in your areas? I wonder if this is going to get the deer through the winter? I hope so. In my area (Detroit Lakes) there seems to be more standing corn than normal and theres alot of trails coming from the woods to these feilds. Its a mixed blessing I guess. Farmers had a tough fall getting there crop in but it may keep the deer alive with the deep snow...
Code-Man
Around Ada at freeze up there was about 30-35% standing corn left. I know some have gotten some off. Around DL I wouldn't be shocked if 20-30% is left also. I am looking forward to shed hunting this spring since where I hunt there is a half section of standing corn right next to my deer land. I am not worried about the deer making it through the winter at all. I'm sure we will lose some late fawns due to the cold spell that we had but the deer I have seen have fat heads and not one bit worried about them making it. The DNR did put a post up on their HSOforum telling people not to feed the deer because there is enough standing still. Don't feel too sad for the farmers. If they wanted to get the corn off they would have back in Nov and Dec. Right now they are waiting for crop insurance. You could tell who had outstanding contracts because they were harvesting enough to get them filled and letting the rest stand.
bigbucks
Lot of standing corn around here as well. Most of the corn left in the field here was do to a couple of things, either it was too wet & the fuel prices to dry it were too high, or they ran out of room to store it & didn't have a buyer for it out of the field. Once we got to early December the snow just got too deep. There's a lot of standing corn not even being bothered by deer, as it's not close enough to yarding areas. Cooter
We have about 2 acres and the neighbor has probably about that much as well. Very little standing in my area other than what was meant to be left for wildlife. Plenty of picked fields as the last few years corn prices got lots of acreage. I'm not worried much about winter kill where I hunt - deer numbers are down so there should be plenty to go around.
