I would prefere to hunt public land and stay some where.

Just like any input from you folks who have hunted out west

Like south dakota montana Wyoming.

Like to hear your imput.

I now have a desire to go out west, on my own

Lots of public land in both Montana and Wyoming. Check their websites. There is loads of info on hunting public lands. I've hunted BLM and Block Management lands in Montana with good success.

Start checking soon. Many of the western states only have licenses to non-residents as a lottery. Many of the submissions for the lottery are in the first few months of the year for that fall.

I made my first trip to Montana this fall for bird hunting. Hunted exlcusively on public lands, there's lots of it. Not sure about the big game, we saw lots of whitetails and antelope. Quite a few muleys and a couple of elk. Mostly hunted for prairie birds so it wasn't necessarily the best big game habitat.

Good Luck!!!!

I have hunted Mule deer in central MT (Lewistown) and eastern WY (Lusk). Both good areas. Lusk area in Wyoming has a great population of antelope and you should have no problem seeing goats there. Hit the hills and draws for the muleys. I would go to WY for goats and maybe a more hilly area for muley's. There are some hills in Lusk just not that many.

Anyone know of some public land that might work for Muley's and Elk in either Montana or Wyoming? Certainly don't give away your honey hole but if someone could point me in the general direction. I'm researching now for a trip a few years away so any other advice would be great. Thanks.

Before I chose Montana for my bird hunt this past fall I contacted the DNR for several staes and told them what I was lookig for - upland birds, public land, etc. I told them I was trying to plan a hunt. They were very helpful by either directing me to a link to request specific information or sent they type of information I was looking for.
