merkman
I want to build a few more but think that I will use steel plumb bobs or have to turn down some round stock to what I want.
Gordie
I stuck one this morning it was 25 incher and it wasnt going to come off the spear at all as amatter of fact it was a bear to get off the tines. throws like a dream didnt really have to throw at all. may have to redesign the barbs a bit. fisherking01
How do you adhere the steel tines to the brass plumb bob? Braze?? I've built many styles and weights of spears, tried lots of ideas, but my favorite is my "pitch fork" 8 tine. 1/2" 5.5 foot handle. 2nd is my stainless 7 tine. I like the 7 tine placed right behind the head, centered, the fish are pretty much dead instantly. I'll post a couple pics when I get my stainless back from my brother! er if i get it back. fisherking01
I'd rather pull one in half than have one swim away with holes in it! I like agressive barbs. I build them agressive, and my buddy grinds them down. I've rebuilt his twice, as he looses fish when he takes them down too far. Nice spear, by the way. Gordie
fisherking yea I brazed them to the brass plumbbob had to heat the plumbbob to almost melting then add the brazing rod. toook a bit of time with the brazing tip so I put the cutting head torch head on and heated and brazed it with the torch head. Whitefishnetter
If you can get your hands on a TIG weldor, thats a good way to build up barbs and attach the tines to the head, I use a piece of 1 !/4 x 1/4 Steel strap across the top of the tines for weight, acts kind of like a airplane wing for those long side angle shots and keeps the bulkiness of the spear down to a minumum. fisherking01
I built a couple new spears and painted them with a color scheme to match the school colors. Kids really like them!

jaymevb
speaking of colored spears, do you think that one painted white would make it harder to see for the fish against the ice or black since they're looking up at a black hole? bassNspear
black forsure!
fisherking01
I've speared with many colors. If the fish doesn't see you, it will not see the spear coming. I prefer dark colors, black is traditional because they have always been that color. It started out black, because blacksmiths that built spears had black paint, old equipment was fixed and painted black to stop rust, they had the paint, therefore it was black for their spears. No other reason.
Gordie
and as Henry Ford said "you can have it any color you want as long as its BLACK" I used to think the same thing that the pike would see you if your wearing white or bright colored clothing but typically they are so intent on then decoy or what ever your useing that there not paying attention to anything but the decoy or whatever, but movements on the other hand can scare a pike faster than anything this also is true with some outside noises such as a truck wheeler passing by and sometimes it dont bother them at all.
