Most overlooked presentation?

Reading the "Best Baits" posts and such got me thinking...what presentation did I not give enough time to last year?

For me it's the spinnerbait, it's the most versatile and easy to use lure, all season long, and I simply don't throw them enough. On the lower end of the muskie lure price range too. It's always a go-to for pike and bass, but not often enough for muskies for me. I'm going to change that in '09.

What did you all not use enough in '08?

For me it's always been the big plastics, Bulldawgs and the like.

I have plenty of them and some of my clients use them with some success.

I think alot of it s just because they weren't around when I started Muskie fishing back some 35 odd years ago. I have trolled with them in the fall, but I just can't seem to get my mind around them in the summer.

Maybe this year!

I picked up some of the "finesse" plastics, Sluggos, Tiger Tubes, etc. and barely got any of them wet. Before I really started targeting 'skis I used to catch a fair amount of accidental fish on plastics intended for bass. I don't know for sure if they're great baits but I rarely gave them a chance. So much is wirtten about pressured fish on key spots, I wonder how conditioned fish get to the "regular" baits as well.

WTD's. i can think of a few times i should have hunted with them last year. i made a half dozen copies of three popular ones to fish with this year, and one of my own concoction.. we'll see how things go. they sure are a lot of work though. or am i doing something wrong? maybe i should upgrade to an 8 footer this year for casting. what do you WTD'ers use? heavy or extra heavy? i figure fast or extra fast for sure.

I prefer the MH action for my WTD lures, in fact all my topwaters I use the MH. Have just gotten used to them and I can work all my baits easily with them. I feel, that there isn't a great need to really hammer the hook set home with topwaters. Most of the strikes are so explosive that the fish will do most of the work for you. If you ever watch Muskies on the Shield, watch how Pearson sets hook on his topraider fish. He basically snaps the line tight and lets the fish do the work for him.

I ended up after switching stuff around with a 8' KT Diamondback Jerkbait rod paired with the Curado 300DSV (line pick-up) as my go-to topwater WTD rod of choice. My WTD lure is always a Weagle, so the heavier rod helps with the casting, I can bomb it out there, and with the tip I can make it dance side to side easily.

Inline topwaters like a Pacemaker are on a 8'6" or 9' Dback with another 300, either a Curado 300 or a Corsair 300.

thanks guys.

i'm not as worried about the hookset so much as getting great action from the lure with the least amount of effort needed. i've got everything else i throw covered rod/reel wise. so i guess i'd just have to go with a faster action for more dance less effort, and not heavier than MH? makes sense unless i'm throwing oak or cedar full of lead. cool. 8'2'' MH, Extra Fast Action, St.Croix Premier, Thorne Brothers Custom. case closed. thanks again smile

I would have to say that I overlooked the spinnerbaits... as I've exclusively thrown topwaters, plastics, and DB-10's all through the season... I did keep my promise by reducing my overall use of DB-10 by increasing the use of plastics and topwaters... it paid off as I finally got my first on a topwater... still need to get my first on plastics...

I am also considering adding jerk/gliders to my arsenal next year, but then again, I plan to refrain myself from fishing at all so I can completely devote my time in finishing the boat renovation then I'll go from there... maybe I'll have enough time to throw more jerk/gliders and spinners, maybe not... still too early to say...

I will throw db10s. They work well. Topwater, plastics, and raddogs will be diversions when the pma (positive muskie attitude) is low. Although I should probably throw some jakes this year too.

Walleye Jig and a 8" Sucker Minnow...jigged slow in the fall. I caught two muskies this fall (both over 36") jigging in 30FOW for walleyes. The amazing thing is that neither one of them chewed through my 8LB test mono. What a rush to bring in a huge fish like this on a Medium-Heavy 6FT Walleye Rod! WHEW!
