mounting vexilar on boat

night bite

Question

I have a 1997 Crestliner Fish Hawk and would like to mount my FL-18 on it. I'm woundering what option is the best for my boat. I see they make a regular and high speed set up. Also would it be better to mount it on the back or the in haul mount. One last thing is what puck size would be best. I fish from 4 ft to 40 ft. Any help would be great. Thanks

I just installed my LX5 in my boat. I went with a front trolling motor style puck. The only option I had was a 20 deg cone. For summer river and lake fishing, this deg. cone should be just fine. The deepest I would be fishing would be the 35-40' range and it will be far and few I would be that deep.

I am pumped to try it out though. If the flasher works just as well in the summer as winter, I will like it.

Plus I went with the bow mount trolling motor ducer, because it should not interfere with the other electronic ducers I run in the rear of the boat that work at high speed.

Good luck..

Hey, one thing I did forget was!!!!!!!!!

Anyone correct me if I am wrong, but when I was a debate between Vex. and Marcum on which one to purchase, I thought about into the summer fishing. I figured why spend the money and have a good quality unit sit on a shelf all summer long.

The one thing I seen about Vex. was a long corded trans ducer set up like the ice style one. Basically you would mount your unit in the boat (helm or bow), and when to got to the area you wanted to fish, you would toss the ducer out, over the side of the boat. It would float like in the hole during ice season.

I will give Vex. one thing, they have more options for summer use than Marcum in the ducer category.

I did look into it, it is an extention for you ice ducer.

I know this does not help for moving around on the lake in your boat, but once you stop, you just toss out your ice ducer next to boat and watch the Vex.

I would click the Vex. Link at the top of the page and go to their web-site. They have all your options there. I would lean twords the dual 9-19 deg. ducer for open water. If not they have other options also.

Good luck..

I have mounted a fl-8 on a boat but put in on the trolling motor. We got a 50ft cord with the transducer, which was way too long, but just taped it to the trolling motor shaft. I also have a Zercom Colorpoint and when I take my 14' little boat I throw it out the side it works alright but it is a hassle. I use it to shoot through the hull when i am runnning and it works good as long as the floor it wet.

Funny thing, I was sweating bullets because MarCum's bow mount ducer has only a 10-11' cord. It work for me though, but some boats it might be too short.

Thanks for the info guys. but I'm looking for one to mount on the boat not the trolling motor cause I would like to use it with out the trolling motor. I would like to be able to use it on the go and not have to slow down and drop the trolling motor. Was woundering if I mounted one in the back if it would work when cruising or is there would be to much interference with the water. any help again would be great. Thanks

Vexilar has several options. I bought the one that you mount on the back of the boat. Haven't been out yet but I have high hopes. The FL18 worked with my MinnKota that has the tranducer built in - only had to buy the connecting cable.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
