Toilet keeps running, Help!

Recommended Posts

Ok, my toilet willrun about every 10 minutes or so, I have shut the water off and it will drain about an inch in 10 minutes. I have replaced the little flapper a couple times, I have also replaced the drain tube assembly with a new flapper. It is running. There isnt any external leaks. Why is it still leaking? What else can it be? Do I need to just replace the toilet? Thanks for any help!

You said you replaced the flapper a couple of times? When was the last time and did it fix the problem for a while? If so then on to next question. Do you use those toilet tank bowl cleaners? If so then that is the problem. If not then I don't know where to go from here.

I replaced the flapper 3 times in the last week! And I replaced the assembly, tube, hole and flapper kit. I dont use the toilet cleaner anymore. I really dont want to call a pluber over to look at it, I could buy a new toilet for what that would cost.

Make sure that the bolts holding the tank to the stool are tight. Over time the tank to stool gaket can shrink and/or harden causing seepage there. If so replace that seal. I had this situation last year and put in three flappers before I figured it out.

The flapper is nothing more than a valve. It sounds like, for whatever reason, the valve is not seating properly. If you have hard water or iron or manganese it could be building some deposits around the valve seat. Try removing the flapper, and just taking some emery and cleaning the seat up real well.

You are correct, however, in that you could buy a real nice power flushing Ferguson for about 150 dollars. Which is a whole lot less than a plumber.

I do believe this seal is bad, but I thought that it only sealed it from leaking exterally. If this seal being bad can cause this, then I am sure that is what it is then. Thanks I will try replacing that seal tonight.

Boiler guy, I tried emery cloth on the valve seat first, then replaced the flapper and seat assy as a complete unit,. still leaked every 10 minutes. Everything I have done hasnt slowed it down at all.

Is there a little tube going from the valve into the over flow tube? If there is and the bend is not enough then it will siphon water into the overflow. I had this happen when I replaced the valve on my toilet.
