Looking at buying a new electric trolling motor..

This in probably not the best "value" up front, but the best electric trolling motor, IMO, for that boat would be a Minnkota Terrova 80#, 60" shaft. More power than you'll use 80% of the time, but it's those windy or strong river current situations that you'll apprciate the extra power.

I've tried in the past to save up front by buying a motor that would work most of the time. In the long run, it cost me more, because if didn't do the job ALL the time. My thoughts.

I have a 1650 FH with a 65lb Minn Kota AP/CP/US. Its excessive for 95% of my fishing but I have had a couple days where its been windy enough to need it and it worked perfectly. 80# is what I would get if I got a bigger boat. My neighbor has a 65lb on an 1850 FH and it falls on its face in any wind.

I have an 18.5ft boat and use a 70lbs Powerdrive V2 AP/US with a 60in shaft and it works well. You are better off haveing to much power and not using it then not having enough when you need it. The Terrova is an upgrade, but will cost a few hundred more.

Depends on your fishing style. I have a 1750 and use the trolling motor 95% of the time I am fishing. I put a 24v-70# PowerDrive V2 and added a CoPilot.

The wind can push around a 1750 pretty good and if you are standing in the bow trying to maneuver, you want to be able to get the boat to respond quickly.

You can run a 70# motor like a 55#er, but you can never get the 55# motor to run at 70#.

I've backed myself into a hole concernig my trolling motor choice. My 55lb is ok, but I would prefer an 80lb. So from my experience, get as big as you can get, and then don't skimp on the batteries. Spend the extra money for the 31 series batteries and you will never complain.

I have a 65lb 24volt MinnKota PowerDrive on a 1750 tiller. More than enough power and goes all day. The new 70lb V2 is a great option. One thing to consider is buying a factory reconditioned motor. I found one that had never seen water, but sustained minor damage (side plate) while being transported. It was repaired by MinnKota, looked brand new, came in the box, and was $200 less than retail. The factory reconditioned models come with a 1 year warranty and the owner of the shop I purchased from explained exactly what happened to make it "factory reconditioned." Still going strong four years later.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
