After reading this post in another thread I think it is worth creating a new thread to remind people to support the organizations that promote your type of fishing, hunting, trapping etc. This may be the MDAA, the LLBA, or any other org that promotes your sport. Even if you can't contribute actively, just having you on their roster really helps in working toward better legislation for your sport. If you are not a member yet give a good thought to signing up today. With all the current law changes these organizations really need your help. They work hard to maintain our right to fish, hunt, or trap in the manner you choose. If this is important to you make sure you support them.

merkman,i agree. to bad you cant donate to 1 fund. to belong to every organization as a member paying dues i would need 2 more jobs. were do you start or stop, who do you join, which do you say no to. examples; deer, darkhouse, pheasant, turkey, grouse, etc. get my drift.

The Minnesota Darkhouse and Angling Association yearly membership fee is $10. You can get a lifetime membership for $400. As some have already mentioned the fee also includes a pretty nice newspaper every other month with spearing/angling news, stories and pictures. In addition to everything they do to advocate on behalf of spearing there are schoolarships and grants provided to youth conservation education, community projects and the DNR. It is amazing what is being done with the relatively small yearly membership fees collected. MDAA members are very dedicated to the sport and related issues. It is a very well run organization.

Many of us who belong to MDAA also support the Michigan Darkhouse and Angling Association to help them out as well. That membership is $20 and includes a less frequent, but nice newpaper.

I am a member of the Dark House as well. The newspapers are awesome to read, and have alot of awesome information in them. Its a great place to be apart of, if you are involded with spearing in the state. Helps us out as anglers to keep spearing alive in the state!!

I'd say use some caution. I don't know anything about spearing organizations, but there are some bowfishing organizations out there that purposefully mislead folks. (i.e. referring to the Buffalo and a "Buffalo Carp" when in fact it is not a carp)

Just make sure the organization you're supporting is morally and ethically sound and it aligned with doing what is best for our resources.

The MN Darkhouse Association has been around since about 1986 (I think) and is well know by the DNR and Legislators in MN. It is a legit organization.

Don't put words in my mouth. mad.gif I never knocked the MN Darkhouse Organization, did I? I just urged people to make sure that an organization's beliefs align with their own personal beliefs.

I never put words in your mouth and never said that you knocked the MDAA. I happen to agree with what you said. There are some organizations out there that are willing to take your money and do little in return. I was just reassuring people that the MDAA is a legit organization that watches the legislature make sure that our spearing and angling interests are protected.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
