4 Man Portable

Dr. Bob

Recommended Posts

I stopped at the new Gander 5 minutes b4 closing on my way home from the cities on Sunday. (They really should have longer hours mad.gif.)

Anyway, I saw a 4 man portable sled unit that was HUGE. It is green and had 2 full padded bench seats in it. The price was marked at $749.

I had just looked at a similar house at Marine General in Duluth that sells for $599 but it was considerably smaller than the one at Gander. This sled/house was made by Polar.

Has anyone looked at the house at Gander? I am really wondering who makes it so I can research it a little. I want a new one for next year and need to know how much I have to save smile.gif.

Thanks

I saw that same shack last night at the Lakeville GM. Looked pretty nice, but heavy.

If you are looking for a doublewide, check out the Voyaguer by Shoremaster.

Duffman on the Shanty forum bought one last year, and he really likes it. I think he got his for under 600 shims.

If you want to see the doublewide I picked up last year, do a search online for shoremaster fabrics. I have the Voyager X-Treme, without seats, I'm constructing my own butt bridges. They've bumped the price up a tad, but it does come fully assembeled and with travel cover.

A six-man double wide! I'll have to head down to Gander and check it out.

I've owned a double wide (6'x12') Otter Skin for 2 seasons now, and couldn't be happier. As far as I'm concerned, you can never have too much room in a shelter. Fishing 4 people is a breeze. I didn't buy the bench type seats that have 2 people back to back. Instead I bought comfortable chairs so everyone is facing the middle. I cut four pieces of plywood about a foot wide each, so they can lay in the bottom of the sled when not in use, drilled four small holes on each side of the sled, and through the plywood, and you've got an instant card table (or whatever) that's fast to set up, and still allows you access to your equipment in the sled. This house is without a doubt the best portable house you can buy. Almost every time i'm out fishing, someone will stop and ask about it because it's huge when set up, and their reactions when i show them my set up inside, is "priceless". I can be completely setup in a matter of about 2 minutes. They are a little more expensive, I think with the sled and cover it was around $800, but it's worth every penny. It's not exactly light, but neither are any of the other models. It seems all i hear about is the Otter Lodge or Cabin, and they're a joke compared to the Otter Skin. It is DEFINITELY THE ANSWER!

dr.bob. you should be happy to hear that you will be fishing out of something like what you are talking about this winter at camp jigglestick. we have a large otter sled, with the canvas double wide made by canvas craft. it is 7 foot something by 12 foot something. it is big. very roomy. a bit bulky to lug around, and when it is loaded with all your gear, it can be down right heavy! the benefits far out weigh the negatives. you will be sad to hear that canvas craft no longer makes that size. i think the only way to obtain one just like it is to find a used one. they are out there, but from what i have seen, they hold their value quite well.
there are a few copy cat models out there so check them out.
there is another unit that might really turn you on, and via email, i could turn you on to it(so as not to post a link here). it is freakin huge, and comes with a stripper stage!! yee haw! [Note from Rick: It's called the Condo and you can see it at
http://RoadKingOutdoors.com ]
good luck in your search. see you this winter smile.gif

I am in the process of purchasing a Poler Sport Double wide 4 Man house off of the FM classifieds. It sounds like a pretty nice shack and you cant beat the price w/o sales tax grin.gif. I can hardly wait to try it out!

Now I've got to get my butt in gear and sell my Otter and 72 Skidoo to help pay for it smile.gif. I have this slight motivation problem though that is aggravated at the moment by a kicka$$ cold. It is really slowing me down..............

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
