1988 v17 bass tracker

Hi guys I have a 1988 v17 bass tracker bass boat and it has a 45hp 4 cylinder mariner outboard on it. I can get about 27 mph out of it with 2 guys and gear does that seem right for speed? Also I was looking at mabey putting a 2000 year mercury 90hp outboard on the back and was woundering how much faster would it go? thanks SRK

Honestly I'd stick with what you have!

27mph range sounds about right, my brother has a 40 Mariner on a 16 foot and gets about 31, so that sounds about right for a 17 foot V hull. It's a pretty significant investment to swap up the motor, motor price itself, rigging, etc. You would do better selling the current boat/motor/trailer as one and upgrading the rig over just doing the motor.

That's my opinion, along the lines of if it's not broke, don't fix it.....

Your speed sound about right for the boat / motor combination.

Upgrading the motor will increase your speed.. by how much? You'd maybe be able to get 35 - 38 out of it with the upgrade, but that's really a stab in the dark.

I agree with cjac though, typically swapping the motor is pretty expensive, and in the long run you'd be better off starting over again...

Besides, that 45 "Classic 50" is a great motor for fishing! It does suck gas, but runs smooth and trolls great. I think our 16' alumacraft with 50 hp merc (82, but same motor) I think can just tick 30 with one guy in it, and a tailwind \:\) But lightened the boat up, removed livewell and rod box, and use it for mainly duck hunting.

good luck,
