Painting brick on the fireplace

MIKE IN lINO III

Recommended Posts

I'm done sheet rocking the ceiling in the basement now the wife wants to paint the red brick that makes up the fireplace.

I think it looks great as is. It is the red brick, floor to ceiling. She wants to paint the brick three different colors to match the new paint on the walls and ceiling.

Any input on the do's or don'ts.

I'd like to talk her out of it but she is standing firm.

DON'T PAINT BRICK!!!

Okay, that is because I was a bricklayers labor when young, and we always hated, and still hate, to see brick painted. My wife is a painter too. But I won't let her paint the brick on our fireplace, but we only have a little bit of brick.

But keeping your wife happy is better than non-painted brick, I have learned that much \:\) Good luck!

I agree - don't paint the brick!!!

If you have to , use a good primer. B-I-N 1-2-3 is good. Then use a quality paint ( Benj. Moore ) and use a semi gloss. Brush it, don't roll or spray it. You want o work the paint into the brick for good adhesion.

But I would recommemnd not painting.

What are the three colors she would want to use? If she really, really thinks painting it is the only way to go, she needs to be very careful in planning colors. It is way too hard to cover up a bad paint mistake. Much easier to change your wall colors down the road if they are not locked up in the brick as well.

We have the red brick look around our fireplace in our basement. Before we repainted last spring, and I made everything match (the 3 main colors all thru our house are light cocoa, sage green, and red), I just put a couple of accents in to draw in the color of the brick.

At first thought I wasn't in favor of painting the brick but when I think of red brick I wouldn't be afraid to get rid of it.

I might try and keep that brick look and stain it. If I didn't like that I'd go with a earth tone and paint. I'd probably end up taking the brick out and use stone.
