Well this one is all on me. I'm not out any money but heres my situation. I got a free Series 31 10" from my brother in law. The auger was bogging out under power so I figured I would adjust the screws. Well the low end screw wouldent stay in one spot so I figured hey take the needle valve out crimp the threads a "little" with a needle nose and then it would be a little more snug. Well I guess I crimped too much it started to get tight and twisted off the needle valve cry.gif . Well I took the carb off and proably have to drill out the rest of the valve and then re tap and hopefully its the same size ir try to get a needle just one size bigger will this work. Yeah we dont have the Cash to get one and we have enough on CC crazy.gif

Don't try and drill it out and tap, you'll never get the correct size mixture screw and you will damage the seat.

Go to the hardware store and ask for an EZ-Out or screw extractor.

You'll center drill the needle screw. The extractor has left hand threads. As you turn the extractor it'll lock onto the broken screw and back it out. Take the model and part number off the carb body, call a small engine shop and get a new screw.

I was told, second hand, that Jiffy used the wrong size fuel jet in the older Legend series machines. I own one which also wants to die after half a hole. If I hit the prime button it powers up again. So I need to hit the prime button every 30 seconds or so. The guy who told me this said that he spoke with a guy at Jiffy, and he said to drill out the fuel jet a few thousandths of an inch, and it will run fine. Does anyone know if this is true? I'm not a mechanical guy, so I'd have to take it to a small engine shop to have this done.

Im not too sure about drilling out jets but it can be done. if youre going to go that far why not just put a new richer jet in? Have you tried adjusting the high speed screw? I have a model 31 8" that's seven years old a slight adjustment of the screw and mine ran fine but it never ran too poorly to start just better now.

If you cross threaded the jet to the point that you actualy broke the jet off in the carb, you are going to buy a new carb. There is no other size jet to put in the carb. That carb had only one size thread.

I do not think that they make an easy out small enough to remove the broken off part of the jet, and if they did, there would not be enough strength in the easy out to remove the broken part of the jet.

Any of the Jiffy auger, or for that matter, any brand with Tecumseh engine, that are in the seven or eight year class all have adjustable carbs. some have only one adjustment, some have two. Due to the EPA, all small engines are regulated for emissions now just like our auto engines. This is why the engine require a long time for warm up. If your carb is adjustable, a 1/4 turn counter clockwise should be all you need on the high speed jet. If you have only one adjustment on the carb, and the minor adjustment does not solve the low power problem, take the auger to a good shop and they can install the proper fuel jet.

Also remember that the engine will run differently at 10 degrees pn the ice that it did when it was in the garage. Minor adjustments will still have to be made on the ice in the cold weather for optimum power and idling.

If anyone else has a problem with the adjustments not staying in place when the engine is running, remove the adjustable jet and spring, stretch the spring and reinstall the jet and readjust. If there is no spring, go to your nearest Tecumseh dealer and get a new adjuster.

Hope this helps

Harry

Mine had the same symptoms and a new carb kit and a jet cleaning fixed it.

My Jiffy once in a while will do that same bog, I found out that with this crappy gas that the fuel vent would get pluged and make it run funny. A little carb cleaner in the cap for a while cleans it right up. I did have to adjust the high end jet a little bit after I had bought it. But other than that its just been the gas cap, make sure you have fresh gas in it every year mine seems to run with older gas but it sure likes the new stuff.Good luck with you Jiffy.
