jiffy ice augers

I have a Jiffy that's over twenty years old. Still works great. Was it new when you bought it? Where does it wobble under where the power head goes on or where the auger goes on the shaft? Do know you need to shoot some grease in the gear case once in a while?

Sounds like you have a worn out gear box for sure. What model is it? Do you have any idea how old it is? When I bought my Jiffy it was worn out too. The guy I bought it from never greased it. I have a model 30 and I have a parts break down that shows all of the gears and bushings and bearings. All I did was call Jiffy and order the parts. 20 years ago it cost me $40.00 for the bearings and a gear. I'm sure the parts will be more $ now. Good Luck

Wishin2Bfishin and will be tomorrow!

there is something wrong with the gear case, but is it worth fixin'? my jiffy has the 10 inch blade and began to wobble about 2 years ago, and it has been getting worse, the good thing is it still works just fine, and thats all the matters to me. until it gets to the point that it won't cut again, I will probally just buy a new one, a strikemaster.

I have the same thing happening with mine but but it is not a problem there is a bit of play in there so its easy to assemble and disassemble if it fit real tight you would have problems removining the arm from the gear box. Don't be concerned!!

I have a small problem with my jiffy/30 it starts right up but it will not stay running, I try to let it warm-up 3 to 4 min. and than start to cut holes only to kill, restart cut kill ect. Till I have about 3 or 4 holes cut than it runs good, are they just this cold blooded or is there a fix for this. Thanks GAR

Hey Gar, There's two adjusting screws on the side of the carburator. One adjusts the idle mixture and the other one is for the high speed mixture. What I've found is a build up of sludge will form at the end of these screws and if you back off the screws (counter clockwise) a 1/2 a turn and run it for a few minutes, then put the screws back where they were it should run fine again. If not you can try adjusting them while it's running but only a 1/4 to 1/2 a turn at a time. I've had my Jiffy for about 20 years and if it has troubles idleing or starving for gas at high speeds I just adjust it a little and it's just fine. Good Luck..

I had a gear box go out on my Strikemaster Lazer XL 3000 go out about a month ago. It was only 3 years old. It would have cost me over 200 dollars in the end to fix it (Labor 30 bucks an hour times 2, plus parts). I traded it in and got the same new model. First trip this past weekend with the new auger and the handles broke at the supposed weld. Someone forgot to weld one side. Gearboxes on all augers are not tough because they are made of pewter. The guy at the repair shop said mine was the 11th he had seen this year. Some people push down way too much and this causes augers to wobble is what he told me. Wobble on Augers means get it to the shop before the whole gear box breaks and it is more money. He said let the auger do the work. I thought I did that but apparently I did not. It does not matter what kind of auger you own things happen.

Try putting a little Sea Foam in the gas/oil
mixture. I run 2 or 3 oz. of Sea Foam in the gas and I don't have any problems with rough running or starting I call Sea Foam the "Mechanic In A Can".

CATCHENBOOTS, I BELIEVE YOUR PROBLEM IS THAT YOU HAVE TO TIGHTEN THE AUGER SCREW.. I BELIEVE THE WOBBLE THAT YOUR GETTING IS BECAUSE THE AUGER IS LOOSE.. THIS SCREW IS RIGHT AT THE TOP OF YOUR AUGER. ALSO IF YOUR GEARS GO ITS VERY SIMPLE TO FIX. YOU JUST PULL UP JIFFYS HSOforum TO FIND A DEALER NEAR YOU AND GO GET YOUR PARTS.. MY GEARS STRIPPED OUT AFTER 14 YEARS OF HARD USE AND IT COST ME $62 FOR MY PARTS AND I FIXED IT IN AN HOUR. I ALSO REPLACED THE CLUTCH ON A FRIENDS JIFFY AND THAT WAS $33 FOR PARTS AND TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR. RECENTLY I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PULL APART A STRIKE MASTER AUGER WITH A BAD CONNECTING ROD.. WELL, LET ME TELL YA AFTER SEEING HOW CHEAPLY THAT WAS BUILT I WILL ALWAYS OWN A JIFFY..

I did "fiddle" with at least one screw earlier in the season and it seemed to run a bit better for a while. Maybe that's the problem. Thanks to all with advice!

The grease fitting should be on the gear case under the bottom, at least that's where it is on my 20 year old Jiffy model 30. I use a waterproof grease that you would use for your car (if it has grease fittings). If you look at the grease it's blue in color. If there is no fitting or a plug you can take out and put a fitting in, you will need to take all of the bolts out and split the case. You might want to do this anyway to clean all of the old grease out and inspect the gears and bearings for wear. I do this every other season just to be sure everything is lubed well. Let me know if you have other questions.

Jiffy has not put zerk fittings on their gear boxes for several years. In the past people would put to much grease into the gear box and it would work its way into the clutch assembly. This caused the clutch to slip.

There is no reason to repack the ger box unless it has been submerged in water or several years old.
