Hole in sheetrock-how to fix

I was puttying up some walls to repaint and when I was sanding in a spot, I found out the prior owner had already fixed a hole...and a little too weakly as my hand went into the wall.

So, I have about a 6" hole in the middle of the sheetrock.

What is the easiest way to fix this?

All i can really figure is to cut out to the studs and then put in a piece and putty it up to look like old.

Also, my wall has orange peel texture.

Is this something I can go buy to do or what is the easiest way to get that textured look back!?

Thanks!

BUMMER!!

What has worked for me in the past is cut the opening to a square/clean the rough break. then cut a piece of scrap sheetrock that just fits the opening but is long enough to screw to 2 sides of the wall. essentially your building a "backing" plate for your new piece to fit over. Then cut your piece that fits the opening screwing that to the backer piece. Tape it then finish as desired. Not sure how you would create the orange peel look on a small area. Could you just use the texture-in-a-can and spray on wall then knock it down??

Good luck

What I do is to take a piece of sheet rock that is 2-3 inches larger than the hole on each side. Now you need to trim away enough of the back side paper and rock so that the remaining rock on the repair piece fits in your hole of you wall. Don't cut through the front side paper. Leave the front side paper on the repair piece the larger size so you actually create a paper flange that will keep the rock from falling into the hole. Apply mud around the edge of the rock you are using to fix the hole and smear enough on the paper flange so you can get the paper to stick to the wall. Smooth the paper out and then let the whole thing dry. Come back the next day and feather a mud skim coat over the hole thing. Sand if needed. The farther you feather out the mud the better it will look.

Have heard of Walleye Guys fix but have not tried myself. First I square the hole. Then I have cut a 1x2 long enough to span the hole plus a couple inches. Put the 1x in the space behind your wall and screw it in on both sides. Cut a piece of rock to fill the hole and screw it to the 1x. Then mud and tape. I would practice the orange peel on a scrap piece (or 3) before doing the wall.

Oh ya with the texture mix some mud thin but not runny use a stiff bristled brush, dip in mud and bend the bristles back while holding the brush 6-8 inches from wall and let the bristles flap the mud on the wall,do a couple practice shots and see how it works.
