Stolen Dog

I got a call last night that one of my dogs pups got stolen from its owner in the Little Falls area a couple days ago. I dont know alot of details but locks were cut to get at the dog. The dog is the is the one on the right in the picture. (its the only pic I have of the dog) If you see the dog please let me know because I would like to get it back with its owner.

The owners kid is 6 years old and is taking it pretty bad that his dog is gone. The dogs name is Ceasar and he is about 9 months old, the dog is mix of setter and beagle. A kennel from the area offered the boy a new puppy but they would like there dog back. I cant believe how low some people will go.

Not 100% sure but the dog may have a I.D. tattoo under its ear.

The dog was found in Florida. The little guy made it a long way. The vet found the tattoo on the ear. (not sure what it even is) the dog will be back home in a few days.

Thats amazing! The odds were very much against the, great to hear the happy ending.

It was some sort of ID tattoo or how did the vet know this was a stolen dog or contact the owners? I know you said you're not sure what it is, but I'd be curious if anyone else knew, because it obviously works.

For those who are going to tattoo their dog.

The preferred location is on the inner leg where it meets the belly. It has been proven that on rare occassions the ear or portions of the ear were removed to take away the tattoos ability to I.D. the animal. Plus the tattoo is readily seen by anyone examining the dog.

Many people use their social security number or D.L. number... you can be easily tracked down by that.

Glad the pup was found! I'm sure the owners are thrilled to know he's coming home.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but after reading this, I'm concerned. What is the best way to "tag" your dog? Implants? Tatoo?

Both! and neither...

What I mean by that is this... having it tattoo'd and having it chipped combined gives you the best chance of seeing your dog again. Especially if it gets 'lost'. But having either/or of the techniques done means little to a thief. They will do what is needed to not make the animal "known" to be stolen...

The tattoos are readily visable and if lost in an outstate area where no chip scanner is available, the tattoo helps with positive ID... the chips are easily scanned and have idependent ID #s, so if a stray is brought in, most metro areas require the stray dog to be scanned, then the number is read, call up the company, they view their data base and walla! The dog finds it way back to you!

To these methods I also employ a "REWARD" note on my collars. My dogs wear a coated nylon collar when hunting (both reg. collar and e-collar) and I write with a permanant marker "REWARD" and my phone number on the inside of the collar. I don't want people to know the dogs name or my address. Reasons are simple... If they know the dogs name they already cleared a huge hurdle in gaining the dogs trust and they may end up keeping it to be their new best hunting dog. Also if I put my address on there, it gives them the ability to scan my residence to see if other dogs would fit the bill... I know it may be a little "Black Helicoptor-ish", but I prefer to keep it simple. Play off their desire to get a reward and a phone number... that's it. Along with chips I feel I have a good chance of seeing them come home.

I used to tattoo, but haven't since running trials. We used to have a tattoo'er come in once a year and do your dog for I think $15... but I have no idea who does them now... they are nice to have done though if you find someone who will do one for you.

And what is this stuff with you guys.....no volunteers for the flogging squad even?

I'll be right there for the flogging, it makes me sick to think of that happening. Glad to here it may have a happy ending. Hopefully, that would never happen to my setter, she kicks me a couple times a night to let me know she's there. I know how it is, I'd let her drive the truck, but her feet don't reach the pedals.

I dont have the whole story because I haven't been able to contact the owner except through voice mail. But here is how the dog was found. Who ever stole the dog tried to remove the I.D. on the dogs ear, the dog got a bad infection and the person brought the dog the vet. When the vet saw the infection and the I.D. he figured out that the dog was probabaly stolen.

Its going to be interesting to hear how the dog ended up in Florida and if the person that stole him got caught.

I will keep you guys updated.

(my wife is a tattoo artist so maybe she can look into doing I.D.'s for dogs)
