iffy
Harvey Lee: A decent chisel, and a scoop for cleaning ice chips out of the hole are two more items to add to your wish list.
shamalex72
You wouldn't "need" an ice saw, but they are nice. Same with the tongs. I have speared quite a few years without either one. You can use your auger and overlap each hole to make a spear hole. I use an old scoop shovel with a bunch of hole drilled in it for removing most of the ice chips, then I finish with one of those green aquarium/fish nets. bassNspear
tom, most of the stuff you have listed. A shovel with holes in the bottom is a must as well.Lets set up a time after i get back from cass lake to go around hutch or something, so you can learn about it and see what you all need. Fish Toys
Harvey. Go with Bass N Spear when he comes up to the Cass lake area and use his fishing equipment. This way you wouldn’t have to purchase anything and if you didn’t enjoy it all you have invested is your time. Live bait harness Push the ice blocks under the ice. Give them a good shove with the chisel and they go a long ways out. A good camera for the pictures of your first fish speared and it so happens to be a wall hanger. A good heart because you might not see anything for hours and all of sudden at the speed of light a giant pike flies in and stops inches from your decoy. That really gets the adrenaline going. It’s the same as angling know your lake to where you want to set up. Give it a try and let us know what you think about it.
10,000 Casts
Quote: Push the ice blocks under the ice. Please don't leave an open 2 1/2'x4' hole, It is better to use your tongs and lift them out and put them back in with a stick in it so snowmobilers can see it. Central Bassman
I don’t like to push the block under the ice also. I like to take it out and then just push it back in ones I’m done. I don’t like knowing that there is a big block of ice sitting right behind my hole. I want it to look as normal as possible, I don’t know if i would worry to much about leaving a hole open for snowmobiles, I would be more worried about a truck or a 4 wheeler that is driving on to the ice. A snowmobile is moving way to fast, that is why we need to make sure we put the ice blocks back into the hole after along with a stick
harvey lee
Lets do that Jason. Like I said, I have always wanted to spear. My only problem is finding the time to go.
Fish Toys
Should have mentioned when we would move our house that we would always find some brush or some kind of marker to leave in the hole. It doesn’t take long till it’s frozen over.
bassNspear
we will figure out on a sunday tom to go out and get some spearing in.let me know what dates for for you.The open water that is there from a spear hole will be frozen within a few hours. I myself, push my block back into the open water, and that cold block, with out the heat running in the house anymore, will freeze very fast.never leave a block on the ice, push it back into the water, and place a stick in the water where it will freeze, so that people will know there was a spear hole cut. cjac
Hey Tom, I asked the same thing of Jason and offered a day of open water muskies in return for a trip out to experience spearing, be ready to up the ante on your end!! I'm first in line! It does sound intersting, doesn't it? Looking forward to a learning day.... Chris
Fish Toys
It’s a lot of fun and you have to have patience if there isn’t any fish moving. It’s good to have some pan fish in the hole to watch. When they disappear in a hurry there should be a predator coming in or near by? Some one should get some pictures of what they are seeing in the hole. cjac
Yes sir, Sounds fun to try it out! So many have a negative connotation towards spearing based on nothing, I want to see for myself! Jason has done a very good job treading the often turbulent waters here in this site. Glad to see you're signed on as a sponsor on FM. Welcome!
