Garmin e-trex GPS

I can't speak for the eTrex specifically but I do use a Garmin Rino and I have not had anything but good things to say so far. Features, ease of use, mapping capability if you're considering the mapping versions, customer service, durability, software availability, are all excellent in my book.

I have an e-trex legend. It is a few years old and not color but it works very well. It has a good base map built in that shows most roads & bodies of water (w/out depth). It is very easy to use and gets you back on a spot. I would say "8". I know they have update since i bought mine but the ability to use a chip for depth contours would be nice & some do have the feature now. I have the lakemaster version for the computer and can transfer points so that works good enough until I can afford to upgrade.

Does not show contours, but is easy to use with my PC.

I recently have developed a display issue though, but I also switched to NiMh batteries recently. I'll go back to alkaline batteries and see what happens.

I’d say a 5, I’m not completely nuts over it, but it gets the job done.

Cal...I have an Etrex I bought last year...wanted something simple and effective to get me back to a spot...not necessarily a spot on spot, but close...it does all of that.

First time I used it, I marked where we got into some perch on Mille Lacs last March, about 4-5 miles out and the next time we went up, I hopped on the 3 wheeler, fired up the Etrex and it took me to within 5 feet of where we had the portable set up....I thought that was okay.

I don't plan on calling in any missile strikes...I don't have to put one down someones smoke stack, I just want to catch a few fish!

A couple of my buds bought those H2O's...man, those things are something! I'd say that if you can afford one and fish alot, those things are the way to go...me, I can't see the small stuff on them so I opt for the basic model that has a larger visual and will get me close, thus the Etrex. I'd give it a 6 overall I guess? Depends on ones needs?

If I'm not mistaken the Legend series is a mapping handheld with at least 8Mb of user memory for downloading mapping software. If you're using the MnLakemaster software that is compatable with Garmin you should be able to download the map data from your PC as well as the waypoints so you have the contours on your Legend, unless your unit is too old. Even then, check their HSOforum because they regularly put firmware updates out there for the handhelds.

I had a ledgend C, nice little gps.

Pros: Small, light, easy on batteries, connects to the computer quickly, software is easy to use, now has capablity of adding memory chips, great customer service.

Cons: Small, hard to use with gloves on (buttons are small) Screen is small, not as popular (harder to ask questions on sites such as this, not to say you won't get an answer, just not as common as to say the lowrance h20.

Side note, sold my garmin and will be getting an h20, not because I did not like the garmin, just that I got the lowrance software for mapping, for free. I have all lowrance in my boat, also use the hand held for vehicle use. Just makes more sense to have only one brand.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
