Double flip over portables

A friend of mine just went on a ice fishing shopping spree and bought the 4 man double flip over, I will be in it for the first time this weekend. They sure look awsome! He just bought it from Reel Fishing in Madison lake, one of our sponsors, excellent service there also, set it up for him and threw in a few things on the deal. I believe he is picking it up as we speak! I cant wait to fish in it this weekend. Although Im sure it will be heavier then my Voyager! smirk.gif

I fished out of a new canvas craft Lodge with the insulated cover and it is very nice.

I'm also in the process of putting together a double wide canvas Craft with the insulated cover and I will say this, plenty of room for four people and I'm sure this house will be ultra warm. Great house for ice fishing.

I bought the FishTrap X4 last winter...3 of us went to Red and hit Mille Lacs on the way home. Found it to be very comfortable. It of course is going to be a bit heavier than a single flip thought. It does set up quick and collapse even faster. It does take a heater on each side to maintain a comfortable enviroment. I use the Big Buddies to keep it warm. Also the sled is about the same size as the single flip so it will fit in a 6 1/2' truck with the gate up. Overall I would recommend it! smile.gif

I had a canvas craft insulated one for 3 years, Sold it to family. I really liked it. I made a couple side plates that fit between the center uprights and hung a buddy heater on each side. Fished one night in Bemidji it was 20 below windy, we were very comfortable inside and didn't need both heaters on high. They are really heavy, wheeler or sled a must. Mine had to have both sides out to function properly.

I've been fishing out of a double flip for 6-8 years now up on LOW and around the area. It doesn't take up any more space, or much weight for that matter, than the single flip. The list of advantages is limitless. We just fish two people from it on LOW. Rather than sit back to back, we sit on the ice in opposite corners, that way you can see each other and talk. It does require a little more heat, but definitely worth it. If you like fishing out of a single flip, you'll love fishing out of a double. If you can swing it, get an insulated one. No doubt it is worth it.

Practice folding it up quickly and efficiently before trying such in that first gale force wind. Maybe even go so far as to labeling the corners to help you remember a folding sequence that works the first time. Right, BPW? smirk.gif

Well I fished out of ityesterday ( sunday) in the high winds. There was plenty of room, it pulled easily. It set up and came down pretty good in the 30 mph winds. The bad thing about it was trying to keep it from flying across the lake. We had 3 adults and one kid, and if anyone of us adults stood up, or leaned forward the house would start sliding in the wind. Although yesterday wouldnt be considered normal fishing. I liked the house, over all use wouldnt be much different then my Yukon.

Anyone used those double flip over portables yet? If so what do you think? Can they be used without setting up both sides?

That's one of the strangest thing that I do with my clam 1060. Sometimes, I don't put up both sides. Like when it's really cold. Or even that I've got it partially up and giving it a low profile. Less space, less heat required to keep warm. I'm thinking of insulation it. My 2008 project.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
