weight for portable flap

I was working on my otter sled today and I was thinking about different ways to hold the outside edge of the portable down besides using snow which for me ends up freezing and I have to kick it from the inside to get it loose. I was thinking of taking 32" long 2" pvc pipes and filling them sand and sealing both ends. when I get set up I would just take the pipes, 1 for each side and 2 for the front flaps. Do you think this would work? besides snow, what does everyone else use? I'm not worried about weight cuz I pull my otter with a snowmobile.

Soderblooms makes a product that we call "snakers". They are 4-5 ft. long and you fill them with sand to hold down the flaps. The nice thing is that you can leave a little room in them and then bend them around the corners of the portable. Northlander was nice enough to give me a couple and I will never use snow again. In fact, I was just over in Ashland on Sunday and there wasn't any snow to put on the flaps. Luckily we had the "snakers" and it wasn't an issue.

Brother MJ taught me well: Use dry, loose snow. Don't use the wet stuff or your auger shavings. And unless it's a gale, it doesn't take much at all. Just get the flap edge covered. With the wind driven hard pack on the lake this week, I wound up just laying a couple of snow blocks here and there on the flaps. Falls right off as the canvas lifts while folding up. Why haul along even more stuff? Kinda like portaging in your firewood and drinking water...

No snow? Turn the heater up a notch. smirk.gif

I'm not sure if it was you but I saw someone point them out in another post. I think I might talk to a relative about sewing up some of them. Wont need them this year with all the snow, but normal early ice I can see a great advantage in them. I do the same thing as the previous, bring out the shovel and get the dry stuff, doesn't freeze up and falls right off. I had to freeze my house down on a really windy day once and thank god a house next to me had a chisel cause that was the only way to free it.

I have an older 2 man clam. I cut pieces of half inch metal electrical conduit about 30 inches long, taped the ends to prevent chafing and slid them into the skirt. I leave them in there and they don't interfere with packing it up to travel. I did this about ten years ago and has worked well.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
