just wondering what would be the proper oil ratio for breaking in a new ice auger.alot of people seem to use 100:1 and either using amsoil or opti.is recomended to use 100:1 right from the start or go 24:1.then 100:1. i still haven't decided between a jiffy or strikemaster yet.they both use the same engines.is the 2hp more stable then the 3hp.how do you start your 2hp in cold weather without a primer button.

thanks

Just used my new Jiffy SYX Pro on Wednesday. I mix like Surface Tension said according to the owners manual. My Jiffy has no primer bulb and as expected it took a few extra pulls as it has never been ran before. After the first start I had no problem. I am with the others, do what is stated in the manual!! As far as 2hp vs. 3hp, I have 2hp and could not as of yet let you know how it cuts as I was only cuttung 5" of ice and I beleive I would not have had a problem with my hand auger but you know how it goes I had the new power auger and had to try it out!!

I have the 2 h.p. Jiffy also and it starts up extremely easy even when its -20. You will get all the details on what fuel/oil mixture in the owners manual. The Jiffy also has a compression release button on the engine which helps when starting in extreme cold. Its a nice machine!

I was told to run a couple tanks at a double mix in my Jiffy model 30 when I got it 8 or 9 years ago. Jiffy says to run a 24:1 mix so double would be 12:1. Now, that is with conventional 2 cycle oil. I know a lot of the synthetic stuff can be run at 100:1. I think it's debatable if you need to run a double mix of oil during break in. I don't really see it hurting too much, though I'm petty sure that mixing more oil can cause a motor to run HOTTER. I don't think a double mix would do any damage though.

I saw "the oilman" answer the question about break in in another post. In the other post, he recommended you mix 1 pillow packet to a half gallon (50:1 ratio) for the first couple of tanks for break in. I can't personally attest to that as my first auger I bought used, and last year I upgraded to a new unit that D-Rock used up at the Brainard fishing tourney. However, I am running amsoil 100:1 now and wouldn't change back to the 24:1

As for the 2hp, I only got to use it a few times last year, but I didn't have any problems with power. The compression button on the 2hp makes starting a lot easier. Slide the choke on, push the compression button in and pull, if it doesn't pop over, push the compression button in again and pull, once it pops, slide the choke off, push the compression button in and pull one last time.

One thing D-Rock mentioned to me when stopping the unit was to actually shut it off by pushing the compression button in rather than flipping the switch to "off". It allows for an easier shut down. (Something with the fins on the inside recoil not slamming back and getting knicked up and busting)

The 3hp has plenty of power, is heavy, but a work horse. (and loud too) One weird thing I noticed was when walking from hole to hole with the 3 hp, I had to carry it straight up otherwise it would stall out. The 2hp you can carry however and it remains running when you want to turn the lake into swiss cheese.

793bob, You might want to see what "the oilman" says. My guess is that he will recommend doing the breakin period following the manufactures' instructions, then after the breakin period is done switch to Amsoil. That way the mfgr can't balk should there be any warranty issues. Phred52

This question has come up a couple of times in different forums.

Many manufacturers of different 2-cycle machines recommend running the oil double rich for the first couple of tanks for break-in. Yes, you can use the AMSOIL Saber Professional for break-in, but I do recommend using it double rich - at 50-1. If you use the pillow packs, just use 1/2 gal gas to 1 packet.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
