Having Identification of Your Portables

Hey All,

I just wanted to put an FYI out there for everyone...i went ice fishing on Osakis on Sunday and had a visit from the DNR. He gave me a warning because I had no I.D. present on the outside of my shack. He stated that even though I did not need a permit, I needed to have either my name and address, my drivers license #, or my DNR # posted on the outside of shack. I looked it up when I got home and he was correct. Just thought I would let people know to maybe save them a ticket.

It was slow....caught some perch....and a couple of them were NICE grin.gif! My only other scare was right at dark I was fishing right off the bottom with a swedish pimple. When all of the sudden a flash appears about 3-4 feet off the bottom. I raised my lure up to the flash and WHAM! I set the hook and whatever it was had some weight! then after like two seconds the line went limp. The hook had come out of its mouth. Had to have been either a walleye or northern. It was really fun to feel that kind of weight though!

Same thing happened to me last year. Although I was only using it as a sled and had not yet used the top that morning. He wrote me a warning, then the DNR guy had a black marker and suggested we fix the problem on the spot by writing my DL number on the side.

But even though I could augue I was using it as sled as opposed to a shelter, I figured against it since he was being so cool about it. It's really nice that they are being cool about an oversight by otherwise honest anglers.

Then he asked me if those were my tip-ups. I was confused, my tip-up was ten yards in front of me. He pointed to a bay on the South end of the lake and I looked as hard as I could. After a short while I spotted 3 or 4 unattended tip-ups in the distance.

So not only a nice guy, but with eyes like a hawk!

I know I've seen this some place, but does anyone know off the top of their head what the standards (hieght/thickness of letters/numbers) are for the ID on the house? I have a big marker just waiting to be used, and I might as well get it out of the way.

- All shelters (including dark houses, fish houses and portable shelters) placed on the

ice of Minnesota waters must have either the complete name and address, driver’s

license number, or the nine-digit Minnesota DNR number on the license of

the owner plainly and legibly displayed on the outside in letters, and figures at least

two inches in height.

I use my DNR number, don't want my address on the house so someone can scope me out and check my garage, don't use my DL number due to ID theft. Don't even put it on my checks anymore. Too many people like this information for other than lawful reasons. And yes 2" is the letter height no matter what info you post on the house. Bill

I just made mine on Microsoft Word. Switched it over to landscape view and made the font as big as I could while keeping it one line. Came out right at two inches( I have a hard time seeing them actually measure unless your an a** to them). Folded the paper in half and laminated with strips of clear tape. Very cheap and does the job. Not as sloppy as the permanent marker too! smile.gif

I haven't put my info on my portable yet for the exact reasons you posted.

How does someone go about getting a DNR#?

    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
