Removing rust from cast iron?

311Hemi

Question

I have a nice wood stove that was unfortunately left out in the elements for the past year (not by me). This was sitting in an ice house that the roof had been removed since it was falling apart. It is now covered with rust...some places worse than others.

It is usable how it is now....but looks like dump. Anything I can do to refinish it?

Would it work to just oil it? When it gets heated the oil would work similar to conditioning a fry pan, wouldn't it? Just open windows the first time you fire it up.

Well, I found some frying pans that were in the same shape. I used some fine steel wool to get the rust off and then oiled them up. My roommate's inebriated friends re-broke them in one morning by frying up a big batch of bacon, so I'm sure their first couple pieces tasted like rust. Worked out great for me...They broke it in and everything from there on tasted just fine! smile.gif

Try the steel wool and oil thing.

If you are going to use the frying pans for frying food, don;t spray on stove black. If for declorating or hanging on the wall, maybe, always a chance someone will use them for cooking. wink.gif The high heat black will stay on your stove.
