Modified plastics

I love the ratso and the shrimpo but have found that fishing deeper water is a pain due to the amount of time it takes to get down to the fish. Have any of you used plastics on other heavier jigs or modified them in any other way to help out with this problem?

Yep.

There are a few companies that produce jigs that fish small and heavy at the same time. CJ&S Diamond Jig, Little Atom Optic Stealth, Your Bobbers Down Wolfram jigs (especially Tungsten) are the ones that come to my mind.

These jigs carry a lot of weight in a small package, add your plastic of choice and you are set to go! Custom Jigs, Lindy, Little Atom, Makiplastics are all great ice fishing plastics. Don't just limit yourself to an out of the box plastic/jig combination. Mix and match until you find what works great for you!

I go to smaller Genz Worms and Fat Boys then. I can't stand waiting for the presentation to reach the fish. I like to slice off just the curly tail part of a white 2" Gulp curly tail minnow and mount that on the hook, it dampens the movement in addition to giving scent. I also cut up the leftover Gulp minnow body into chunks, and use those, too, for more active periods.

That's why I fish two line's...I wait for one to drop down while I fish the other one... grin.gif

If I fish one line, I sort of do a drop shot style three way rig. It's just that I'll have an added weight on a lead line about 1-2 feet. Then I attached a 6-12 inch line like 20# mono to make the lure sit a little offside of the main line. Attached to that 3# line and then lure. A lot of work but it's neat when you twist your line around to get a subtle lateral swim action versus trying do that in just your ice hole. Given that deep water will prevent that kind of later swim movement anyway, but sometimes those tight lipped fish don't like just up and down movement.

Thanks guys. I have plenty of the jigs from "YourBobbersDown" as well as marmooskas but no diamond jigs. Not sure what a Diamond Jig is. Is this a vertical presentatin similar to a pilkie but 3D diamond shaped? Also are the NUGGIES from Little Atom really better than others?

The Diamond Jig is made by Custom Jigs & Spins. It's similar to the Wolframs and Marmooskas.

Diamond Jigs are really, really similar to Marmooskas. The jighead is just faceted rather than round/smooth and available in different colors. Basically same thing, just minor variations. Really similar to the YBD Wolframs as well.

The one thing the Little Atom plastics have going for them over many of the other plastics are the scent. They are scented with Anise oil. The Nuggies are basically a tail, with a ball on one end. The ball makes hooking the plastic easy, and the tail is also a flattened out tail, which creates a different kind of action in the water. I don't know... I like them!
