Pulled the rods out of storage...

And my St Croix Legend spring bobber rod has the tip broken 1/2" from the end.

It was one of the "older" style handles too which I much prefer over that plastic reel seat.

I don't think there is a rod out there with a worse reputation for breaking tips, and it finally happened to mine!

What do you do? Fix it? St Croix won't replace them? Throw it away? Buy a new one for $50 clams and hope the tip on that one is better.

I had a similar thing happen last year to my one croix. I just took a small drill and drilled out the remaining tip from the end guide. Then reglued it onto the rod. I only lost one inch on the rod and you'd have a hard time telling it wasn't made that way. That rod worked fine all last ice season.

Chris- If it were me.. and you really liked the tip on that croix... I would have the buys at Thorns make a rod as you like it.. and have them leave the tip off.. You can then yourself take the tip off the broken rod and re put it on the new rod... talk to them at thornes.. they may be able to save the reel seat as well?... If you like it?

Just a bad weekend you know...

Was shooting the deer rifle yesterday, it was my grandpa's dad's gun, Remington Model 740 Woodsmaster .280, when a chunk of the forearm wood along the barrel broke off. The gun is not super old by any means but it has quite a history in the family.

I think we can repair it alright but that did not make me a happy camper either.

hanson,

I've never broken one yet, but I have had a few have the tips simply fall off or come unglued. I just re-glued them (at last they were straight).

I'd recommend drilling out the old rod tip, possibly cut the bad part off the rod, and reglue.

Yeah, only a matter of time with the St.Croix rods. Unfortuanately.... I have sent a few back to them and they sent me brand new ones in replace of and at no cost. But, I've heard more bad stories than good about this issue, so I'd stick with the above posts and have thorne's make you one up.

Hanson-Can you clean out the tip-top and re-affix it to the tip of the rod????? Or is it a lost cause?? I have had a couple of rods that broke the tip of and just cleaned out the tip top and replaced them. The action will be slightly stiffer, but it will never be the exact same.

Still hate to see it happen. I have carried my rods in a bag now for several years and am kicking the idea around of a hard sided case of some kind.

I'm going to try and drill out the blank from the rod tip guide but I'm not sure how that will go. The diameter of the blank at the tip has got to be less than 1/16 of an inch and there really isn't a lot to hang onto. Will have to grip the guides with a pliers as I'm not sure I can get it into a vise with the top & bottom guides of the Legend. I think I'll keep the gauze and bandages close by. grin.gif

This rod did not break from getting hit or damaged. I left the spring bobber on the rod when I stored it and secured a lure to the "keeper" and tightened up my line until the spring bent over. With 2lb line and that spring on there, there was very little tension on the rod but that tension over a period of time appears to be what snapped it.

You know... my mistake. I should have taken the lure off and removed the line tension from the rod but I got lazy and just put my rod case up on the shelf and forgot about it until now when I'm getting ready for the season. Problem is like I mentioned before... these rods are notorious for breakage. Shoot, St Croix ice rods in general are. confused.gif

I'll get a pic up tomorrow so ya'll can see the damage.

This may almost be a blessing...I have the new version and absolutely love the spring bobber. I even like the reel seat. But the rod is so stiff...even the ultra light. It feels like a two-by-four

If you figure this out, I might pay you (or somebody else) to take the spring bobber off my stiff St. Croix rod, and put it on a true ultralight rod. I have a gander mtn rod that is and UL and has the small diameter at the end. I love the action on the rod and wish I could put the st. croix spring bobber on the gander rod.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
