Quantity vs. quality

if i am with a kid i would go with quantity. with a group of hardcore fisherman, quality. fishing is the main part. being outdoors and breathin in the fresh air, without much to worry about except where to fish n what bait to use.

I ask myself this question every time out.
Do I want to catch a few to eat or do I want that trophy? I usually get my answer with the first few fish I catch. If they are small I hope to get a lot of action, but if I am lucky enough to catch a big one I hope to catch a bigger one. If they are big they go back, if they are small I will only keep a few to eat. While my passion is fishing, I hate to clean fish. A great incentive for my own personal catch and release program.

Best tasting are the chip fish.. those small crappies about 1/4 lb to 1/2 lb. Plenty of lakes have those.
From quantity vs quality, depends on who you are trying to impress. Only yourself enjoyment. Whats more impressive is if you can catch more than the other guy. But when it comes to eating..... O HO ho ho, those small fish can't be beat.

I too am more of a quantity person. However, that also is a tough question...That would not enlude catching 4" perch or sunfish... I will usually do some searching to find a collection of semi-quiality fish, if not quality fish.

I will say this, I usually dont go out and sit on one spot for a long peroid of time and "wait" for the big fish to come to me. I would rather drill a ton of holes and hope to find them!

Fisherman usually go thru stages, first is any fish, second is many fish, and then big fish. Personally I am in the many big fish stage. I enjoy my time afield as much as anyone, and have been blessed to spend it in some of the most beautiful places our country has to offer. Even tho some trips end with little or no success and are wonderful trips indeed. The goal each and every time with the exception of the rare lazy day, is to catch as many fish as possible. The reasoning behind this mindset is that if you have the goal of many fish you will work harder to achieve it. And if you try harder you will have better success. I have had enough fishless days to last me a lifetime (not to say there won't be others). There is a lot of truth to the saying that 10 pct. of the fisherman catch 90 pct. of the fish. I for one will do everything that I can to be in that top 10 pct. This is achieved thru study, practice, and observation with a little gut feeling thrown in for good measure. The only thing better than me catching alot of fish is for you to catch more. Kwkfsh grin.gif

It depends. I like lakes that have both a good population of "big fish" as well as a healthy population of panfish. Ice Fishing-- I am almost strictly a panfish guy. Other than a few Northerns that I've caught by accident fishing for crappies (And small bass and walleyes as well) I do best with panfish. I am however looking to try to catch some more unique species under the ice this year, such as carp and cats.

Open water season I still do a lot of panfish fishing; and often catch a lot of my big bass and pike "accidently" It's fun fighting a 3lb bass or 5lb Northern on Ultralight tackle and 4lb test... Your sweating every moment...
I get my moods however where I want to try for that big carp, cat, bass, or Northern; and fish for nothing else. But about 75% of my open water fishing is dedicated to panfish, whereas 90% of it goes there during the winter.

But.. I do get annoyed with lakes that have stunted panfish populations. Catching a bunch of 3-5" isn't all that fun-- espically when your loosing hooks left and right to the little buggers. During icefishing I'm a little more leniant. I'd rather catch a few little ones than nothing at all.

Good stuff, good stuff, I personaly think it depends on the lake and mood. Some times I'll be content to sit and catch hoards of little ones, but sometimes like to move to find bigger fish. But fishing is fishing I guess, and I love it all.

What do you mean???

I want to catch a huge Crappie on every single drop of the line.... wink.gif

I guess it really depends on the mood. When the Crappies are slow, I'd like to catch a million...When the Crappies bite fast, but are kinda dinky, I'd like to catch a few biggies.

Other times, it just doesn't matter.

No question about it... I'd much rather have a shot at a few big guys. It is tough to suck up the occasional shunking though.

Today Michael (8, almost) and me will be heading out for pike, so numbers is a bigger part of the picture. We plan to meet up with a couple brothers and their nephew so we can cover an area with flags and let the kids do all the tuggin'.

;D
