Ice House Stereo?

Aces In The Hole

Recommended Posts

So we got a 8x18 permenant on Mille Lacs and we are looking to put a stereo in it. Nothing fancy, and big, just a radio with a few speakers to it. Just wondering what kind of music device has people used in their house? A boombox just doesn't cut it for us since we like to blast David Allen Coe after a long day of fishing and drinking. grin.gif Any suggestions would be great!! I can't wait to get out on the ice this year!! Hurry up and get cold mother nature!!

Our old 10x20 had a cd player mounted in a console above the kitchen area with some 6x9's attached. A little better sound out of the 6x9 compared to the 6.5"s, etc.

Hook up to the main batteries and you're set.

A cd player with a remote might be a good idea if you mount it up higher.

The car stereo is the way to go. However, I recommend a model with a powered iPod input. That way you can listen to your own tunes, never run out of battery, and not need to stop to tune in a new station. You can get a cheap model for less than $200.

I have a wheel house and a big one on mille lacs as well, for both I went to the junkyard and bought a car cd deck for $30. wired it direct to the battery and put an antenna on it. works great, doesn't draw too much off the battery and just used some old speakers I had lying around. cheap and very easy to install

Honestly I have no clue the brand we have. I got it at Wal-Mart and it was the baseline model. The formats that it plays are unbelievable. CD/MP3/SanDisk capable/IPOD hookup/line-in jacks to play tv volume - I'm sure I missed a couple other formats it accepts. I believe it only cost around $75. Like someone else said, I wouldn't worry too much about the brand, but look for the formats it plays.

I plan to have the TV running through the stereo this winter. Be great watching football, and the "AC/DC Live at Donnington" video!

If you have sattelight radio in your truck, any boom box will do to bring into you ice house. Just turn on you truck an sattellight system, turn your boom box to the appropriate 99.1 or the same frequency you sattellight system is an you have instant sattellight radio in your fishhouse. just dont let your truck battery wear down, in that cace plug your ac adaptor of your sattellight system into a jumper battery pack if it has one should last for hours. My kids watch movies with a traveling dvd an a jumper pack we get about tree to four movies per charge. Boar

This thing rocks very loud and is hooked in T.V. and has surround sound speakers at both ends of shack. Its worked great for me for years. I got it cheap ($50.00) and has inputs jacks on it, dual tape deck, 3 disc c/d changer and radio.

Good luck!!

I got a sweet deal on an hsolist car stereo. It has a iPod auxiliary input so I use my sons iPod during the ice season, put all my favorite 80's rock on it. I use my indoor/outdoor yamaha speakers from my deck, perfect match, plenty of sound. The only thing I'll do different this year is to run 2 batteries in parallel. Rock on!!! cool.gif

Thanks for the info everyone. I was also wondering if anyone knew where I could get a car stereo deck that comes with speakers? Like I said before the one we wanted from Wal-Mart, were all out and I can't seem to find it any where else. Also, how many speakers do you think would be good for a 8x18 house?

That's what I'm talking about!

When is the last time you guys listened to some of the boom boxes that are available today? They can have awesome power and great sound in some pretty small boxes now-a-days. Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

how do i find out the power wire on a kenwood car stereo without having the wires there....sorry might of sounded like a dumb question

In a typical car installation the yellow wire would be a 12-volt constant that keeps your clock and radio stations programmed.

The red wire is a 12-volt wire that gets hooked up to the key so when you turn your key the radio turns on.

The black is the ground wire.

If you are going to hook up the radio in an ice house with a 12-volt battery, you will need to hook up both the red and yellow to the + 12-volt side of the battery and the black ground wire to the - side.

I have played with the car radio thing! I Used Sony C/D player and kenwood speakers.

Pro's

-----------------

1) 12v power source. (I bring generator up every weekend I go, so this was not a big deal with me).

2) Antenna signal works great when hooked up to car antenna (if you have one).

3) Compact

____________________________________________________________

Con's!

----------------------

1)Unless you buy a very expensive unit ($100-300) Sound quality suffers. Throw speakers in there and thing start getting pretty high priced.

2) You have to buy or build a custom box to house unit and speakers in.

3) Being old school like me, finding a unit with tape,c/d changer combo in it get tough. Can be done!

4) Not a big deal, but no suround sound for entertainment at night or for kids. Nothing beats being on ice and cooking pop corn and watching a new release with familey.

This is just what I have found!

Now, I am in the works on putting a sony and speakers in my Otter tail and having hanging speakers. I used a battery operated one now and would love to tap into deep cycle for long periods of time.

I have my stereo mounted in a cabinet, the speakers (2 of them) mounted in my ceiling. Does it sound like listening to a concert at the Excel? No.. Does it sound good and am I happy with them, yes..

I think I paid about $100 for my stereo and probably $50 for a pair of car speakers. You can probably go a little lower and much higher.. Depends on your budget.

Goto any of the big box electronic stores and look around. I dont know if they carry the stereo and speakers boxed together, but you can buy them seperatly, mix and match.

if you look around online you can find car cd players that also play dvd's. you can burn a crapload of songs to a dvd if you like but its nice cuz i can hook it to my tv and the sound goes through all the speakers in my ceiling. i think i paid around $80 on hsolist with a 1 year warranty and remote. just another option for everyone to consider. i believe its also got a built in tv tuner

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
