Clam X2

I have a Voyeaguer and love it. Plenty of room to move and fish. Brother in Law just got an X2 at the end of the season and it is a very nice house. Tub is much heavier than my voyeager. If you are leaning toward the Yukon, I would recomend the extra couple $ and get the Voyeager. Couple friends have Yukons and like them, but wish they would have bought voyeagers now. All of them are good fish houses. Will probably find many on here that have otters, and they are real good fish houses too. Ice can't get here soon enough. grin.gif

I ran an X2 all last season... To be totally honest, I was very impressed with this new flip over shelter... It was a very thought out shelter that fit my needs well..

The biggest thing to consider on this shelter is the weight, this shelter was made for the most extreme ice fishing adventures. Mainly to be used for pulling behind a wheeler, a snowmobile, or to be put into the bed of a pick-up and unloaded at your fishing hole. The weight, makes it much more difficult to hand pull through snow, slush, and the alike, especially when loaded down with gear. Does pull great on smooth ice though.

If this is the route your looking at, I would definately suggest the X2 for a new shack and to last for many more years to come.

But if your limited to pulling by hand most of the time, I would look at the Yukon. This shack will ease your pain of lugging around a lot more weight then you need and still give you the comforts of a great ice shack for an all day outing on the ice.

Let me know if you need any more info...

Used the x-2 all last winter.Used mainly when i fished with a group or overnight. It has been all i expected. It sets up fairly quick and has a very solid sled design for pulling.I strengthed my unit by add a hy fax sheet to the bottom and some extra gussets were the hitch attached. It is heavy,it is about all one person could load in the back of a truck by their self.I would buy another if i had to do over.Burl.

good info guys thanks! I am limited to pulling by hand (no wheeler) so the voyager does seem to make senseover the X2. (I would like to extra room that the voyager has).

If anyone else has input I would love to hear it! I want to get the house that I'll be happy with for at least a few years.

One other question, Is it possible to fish two adults and small kid out of a voyager?

I have had a voyager for the past few years and it is a great unit. The main thing I like about it over a yukon is most people can stand up in it. I have fished 3 from mine many times, but it does get tight. I do like the X2 also but my voyager has held up very well. I have added hy-fax to mine to help with pulling and to reduce wear on the sled.

I got a Yukon last year and love it. I can load it and pull it by myself. I feel there is a good amount of room in these. The Yukon was an upgrade to my 2000. I would buy another one again without even thinking about it. The reason for not getting the Voyager was weight and $$. I will only be using it for me and my two boys at the most. My buddy has his own, so we did not need a big one for the two of us. Although we have fished together out of one.

I got an X2 at the end of January for $550, saw a closeout demo go for $450 at Gander in FL mid February. I wouldn't imagine they could be too much cheaper with the price of raw materials on the rise.

Never know though. LB

I've got a Yukon, and an X2. I bought the Yukon at the ice show the first year they were released, and used it heavy up until last winter. Very good house. The one knock on it I have is the sled(or black bathtub). It is a little on the flimsy side to be pulling with the wheeler. The X2 is the Cadilac of houses IMO. The one knock I have against it is its weight, 140#. Twice as much as the Yukon. If you don't have a wheeler, and do alot of moving, stay with the Yukon. The X2 was made to be pulled with a machine, not by hand.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
