Silly me, scouted for other hunters!

Recommended Posts

I saw a couple flocks of geese land in a sweet corn field last night. So I called the land owner. He said he did give permission to some other guys, but they have not been in it yet this season. "If they aren't going to be in there, go ahead!" Well I thought the decent thing to do was to talk to the guys that had gotten permission originally. That was my first mistake. Got the number from the land owner, and he agreed it was a nice gesture. Called and told one of the 3 guys what the land owner had said. He said I'm sure we won't be in it. We plan on going into the same field we hunted this evening, (10 miles away). "WE even left out all our gear. Why did you see geese in it?" Told him I saw a few passing over but not sure if anything landed. (little white lie) Got out to the field a little after 5 am and I saw a couple sets of head lights in it. Drove out to find the guys had changed they're minds and came out to this field instead. So sometime between 9:30 last night, after I talked to them, and 5am this morning they went out and picked up all they're gear and moved it to the field I got the ok for. After talking to them a few minutes I realized I had done a really dumb thing. I did all there scouting for them. But that wasn't the worst of it. There were only 3 of them, so I thought the least they could do was ask me to hunt with them, since I did all there leg work. But they basicly ran me out of the field, saying they were here now, so, see ya! fishingguy 0, jerks 1. Some day I will learn. hehe!

Yeah that's definitely a crappy deal. It'd be different if the guys told you that they were going to hunt it, but after letting them know and them "changing their minds," that's pretty weak. I just hope that when, not if, I run into other hunters, they have a some ethics and respect like you. You should have asked where the other field was just to get a reaction smirk.gif

Not cool. I was galled by a group of hunters that waltzed into a blind on a shared piece of land that they hadn't hunted the day before. They proceeded to set up and walked past me about 3-4 times and didn't even say a word as they set up 40 yards away from me.

There's something to be said about the poor etiquette these days. I'm a lover not a fighter, so whether its fishing or hunting I'm all about sharing the love. I'll invite someone into the blind or the boat before I knowingly step on their toes.

too bad, I never would have a had any problem with letting another hunter in on the hunt. I more than likely would have been thankful that you notified me of the me the geese and maybe developed a new hunting partner. Others don't always think like us though.

Thats to bad. They could have been a little more friendly and invited you along for the morning. They could have made a new friend. That same thing happened to me about 7-8 yrs ago and the person that I met out on that field is my hunting partner and best friend now!

Definately a classless act of sportmanship. You did all the right things in contacting them before your hunt since they also had permisson to be there, but for them to cut you out of the hunt all together is wrong. You are more of gentleman than I in the sense that I also would of packed up and left, but not without a few short words to let them know how I felt about their actions. Good Job.

-hey guppie are you originally from LeCenter. I was born and raised there. Graduated in 91.

Okay, here is what you do!!!

Continue to scout that same field and when you are ABSOLUTELY sure that there are NO GEESE feeding in it, go ahead and give them a call. Tell them six family groups honkers dropped in... wink.gif
