Camping/fishing trip advice

My buddies and I are looking at doing a brief fishing and camping trip on September 15. I know it's kind of short notice, so we aren't dead set on making this happen, but I'm giving it a shot.

I live in Duluth and they live in eastern ND and we would like to find a place somewhere in the middle. I'm thinking the Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, or Leech Lake areas would work. We would like to camp to save money, but if a small cabin was available for a good rate, that would be great. We also need to rent a boat and motor.

So with that in mind, any ideas for us? I've been looking at the resort section here on FM, and I'm getting some ideas, but there are a lot of resorts to look at.

If Leech lake is one of your possible destinations, you may want to look up the stoney point campground. Very nice facilities there. Not sure how busy they are in september, but I do know through the summer they are pretty full. Good fish-cleaning station, clean facilities for shower/bathroom, nice boat launch as well. It is shallow, but protected from the wind.

Check out the Big Bog State Park located right next to Upper Red Lake. You can rent a small cabin there that sleeps up to 6 people for only $45.00 a night. You have to do your cooking on a grill outside. There's a shower house and fish cleaning house also. There are several very good resort's located right near there so you wouldn't have any problem renting a boat and motor. Also you might want to check out the Upper Red Lake forum right here on FM. How about Winnie or and Cut Foot Sioux. Plenty of camp sites and the fall bite is just starting up.If a cabin is still something you might want check out Highbanks resort. You would have food and drink close by and close to good fishing.If it got too windy head to Cut foot.

I would also go the Winnie Route... Though I'd stay on Cut Foot Sioux instead of on Big Winnie itself... Wind can whip up in the fall, and Winnie can get (Contact Us Please) wave wise.

At least if you're already in CFS, you've got fishable areas to stay clear of the high winds. I believe both Bowen Lodge and Williams Narrows are both open this time of year.
