Critter Problems

Something is burrowing tunnels in my rose garden. Whatever it is is making tunnels in and around the plants. They are about the size of a half dollar. They come to the surface in little trenches in several places. They do not leave mounds like a mole. My cat caught a chipmonk here last year, but... I have tried mole / vole poison in the holes to no avail. Any ideas?

DB, sounds like Voles to me. I have them all over my yard and around my hostas. I've had success buying oversized mouse (rat) traps and putting peanut butter on it. Sometimes I set the trap out with peanut butter on it but not set to bait them in. I've trapped about 10 so far this summer. The bad news is, is that they breed worse than rabbits. I've tried the repellent (fox urine) to no avail. I haven't tried red pepper flakes yet but I might soon to try to get rid of them before winter. Hope the information helps.

a product called the "giant destroyer" works well on burrowing pests. it looks like a stick of dynamite. you put the fuse in, light it, let it get smoking and place it in a burrow and cover the burrow back up. it will fill the burrows with a gas that will kill the pests. I use it all the time and it works well!!

Katoguy~

A quick Google search will provide you what you're looking for. It's cheap too (unless you buy it by the case). I'm going to give it a whirl...

Thanks for the suggestion, Ryan V.

I just buy giant destroyers at my local ace hardware. they come in a package of 4 for under $10. i believe they might also have them (or something similar) at menards, home depot...etc.

Picked up a pack of the Destroyers last night - pack of 4 for under $7.

Question Ryan V ~ the package doesn't say, but should I have any concerns putting these down a hole that's near the house? I have cement front patio and the little buggers burrowed down adjacent to it. Also, how much smoke are we talking with these things? Any harmful effects for kids, or should I make sure to do it when they're not around?

Thanks?

it does give off a lot of smoke, but should remain underground. I will occasionally see a little smoke coming up from the ground when I do it. I don't do it when my kids are near, probably not necessary, but why chance it. I have actually put one under my cement slab in my pole shed before. I smelled it right away when it was burning, but it didn't linger. the main thing is to make sure it's burning good, put it down the hole and cover the hole back up with something. I watch it for about 5-7 minutes and it I see smoke coming up any other holes, I cover them as well. it should work on woodchucks as well.

    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
