trailer axle needed...where should I look?

Ice-9

Question

Any suggestions on a source for a trailer axle...probably an unusual size since the boat is small and old. Axle size is 55 1/2 by 1 inch with a 40 1/2 inch hole-to-hole length between the leaf springs.

Or, suggestions about how to improvise would be welcomed.

thanks

I would go to a junk yard and look at the rear, or trailing axle off a front wheel drive Dodge van. They are low to the ground and the springs on your old axle might bolt onto it. You can also get one with the springs already attached and use it that way, the tires will either be 14 or 15 in and will carry a pretty big load. Just a thought. I built a boat trailer and two snowmobile using these axles. I gave $40 for two and $60 for two, thats for axle, tires rims and springs.

Thanks, fellas. Northern Tool apparently doesn't stock the required size/length and we hope to replace the axle without changing the rest of the assembly. Seems like most replacements are for the whole deal. I found good results on a couple of these suggestions.

Try Crystal Welding in Dayton. I needed a new axel last summer and they had it for me in about 3 hours time. Take your measurements to them and they should be able to take care of you.
