Duck hunting spot in SE NoDak wanted

Recommended Posts

I need to contact a land owner who has a duck hunting pothole or slough that can be accessed for a REASONABLE daily fee. Don't need to shoot limits, mainly going for the dog and to give a couple old guys one more season of watching ducks fly. Please don't suggest places that charge multi-hundreds a day. First, we don't have it and second, its sorta silly for a couple guys who might sit there for three or four mornings drinking coffee and watching the sun come up. wink.gif

You could just go look for a non-posted spot or a "plot" (private land open to sportsman)or else just ask any random farmer who has land with ducks or geese on it who will most likely have no problem with you hunting it free of charge..

Because it seems to be the name of the game today Brian, thats why. Do I like it? Hell No! Forty years ago guys from Fargo and other NoDak places came to OUR place and hunted with permission of my dad and granddad. Today the table has turned-there simply are no ducks here to hunt, so we have to try to find a place in NDak. We have tried driving around etc. and can usually never find a place or can't find out who owns it. Went over last year, was there for four days and never fired a shot. I figure you gotta pay or you are not gonna play. And me time is running out. Thanks. wink.gif

I have been hunting down there for about 10 years and I have never had any problems with any land owners and hunting on their land. Most of the time they say shot as many as you can!!! Maybe because I have ND plates I dont know. As far as ducks you shouldnt have a problem. Pheasants might be a different story. There is a lot of land down there that are open to the public too. If you want some exact locations where I know you will see some birds let me know and I will email them to you. You shouldnt have to pay to hunt in North Dakota!!!!

I recall your posts from last year ufatz...

I think your money might be better spent on purchasing a plat book for the area you're interested in hunting so you can find the landowners to contact. That, or make a trip down here sometime in late august / early september, do some sccouting on google earth to find some spots that hold some water or areas you'd like to hunt and then start knocking on some doors.

That, or hit the plots land... but the plots is geared more (in my opinion anyway) to upland hunting than duck hunting.

for every person that pays someone to allow them to hunt you are continue to make it tougher for everyone else. There is no reason to pay for birds. But then again I would rather not hunt that pay for birds.

These is simply no justification on paying anything to hunt any land... when you start getting into high qaulity territory, say like devils lake, you will find land owners who do charge but that is becuase their land is covered... literally, by ducks and geese every single fall and a bunch of rich people from who knows where come in and pay... We work around all of that i would never pay a dime.. we have a trailer full of geese decoys.... a tight knit group of college buddies..... and at least 2-300 different spots we have hunted between grand forks and devils lake in the last 4 years all over the area. Honestly all you really have to do is some simple homework, find places that hold any type of flying target, go there... if its posted, go talk to a landowner, if its not, its free to hunt but kind to ask anyways.. by now if your land hhasn't been posted in north dakota than you clearly have no porblem with having someone on your land..

I'll probably wander on over in a week or so. Was around Lisbon a couple years ago driving around. I think there might be places by the Teawaukan Reserve over near Havana. Trouble, as always, is tracking down an owner. I'm going to give it another try. If nothing this year it'll probably be my last year for trying. But Hey! I had some duck hunting years most guys would not believe. grin.gif

Don't give up because i know you will be able to find a place.. if its posted there is an 90 percent chance some random person in the area of the posted signs will know the owner and promotly direct you to them... nodak isn't like mn, you can hunt land as long as its not posted...

All posted signs, by law, must have the owners name on them as well... if you can find that and get a hold of a phone book for the area you should be in business.

I would say that it may be a little early to do some scouting - most people who post their land don't have any signs up yet... making it even more difficult to determine who owns it. If it were me I'd wait until a week before you plan on coming (or closer to the season you plan on hunting anyway) that way you can see what the local ducks are up to and most people will have their land posted by then.

The two hottest spots we found after hours of driving were not posted morning of August 31st, but when we returned that very evening to sleep near our spot for the early goose opener... we found both spots entirely litered with posted signs... never the less we found a farmer working in the area who guided us to a freshly cut oat field down the road where we got our limit anyways.. We found our spot at midnight 6 hours before we could shoot geese, its just that easy if u really put some effort into..

I would agree that all land is not posted as of yet. I usually dont post my deer hunting land in ND until a week before the season. Sometimes if someone does stop and ask, I will allow some to deer or turkey hunt if they seem to be ok.

Many times if you stop into the ranchers place they are more than willing to help out and tell you where a good spot would be to hunt.

Yes, ND is not like MInnesota at all from what I have personally seen over the years with getting permission to hunt on private property.

Okay fellas, thanks for the posts. We will probably try it again. But I'm sure you understand that we start right off with a $200 nonres license and then add the other costs and before you know it we have tidy little sum invested just for the drive over and a motel or two. And like last year, not a shot fired. Sorta gets discouraging. One of my pals has already hung up his shotgun for the last time. I'm less than 70 and I'd like to get in a couple more seasons of at least watching the ducks fly. And then there's my new little girl Annie....who is wired and ready to go!

Have fun boys....before its too late. grin.gif

Ufatz your in OTC? Why would you want to leave? Lots of birds around here last year. I work in Perham and live by Urbank lots of places to hunt around here with Christina, Dead, rivers, public ares. I've gone to ND every year since before I went to college out there. Each year is different water wise, I go out in August or so and bring homemade jellies and find some nice sloughs and knock on doors. I've got lots of spots but I let the birds decide where I should be. If you want to be right by Tewaukon good luck with those landowners they get HARASSED by out of staters or they are out of staters who bought land just to hunt. Go by Valley City and hunt public land to the north it'll be alot easier.

Well bless your heart Kobear, I'm happy to see find all kinds of ducks in OT County.Ha! I sure don't. There is not a duck on a pothole within 20-miles of where I live. And of course all the potholes that USED to have them are now plowed under. I did NOT realize the landowners over around Teawaukon were being HARRASSED by us non-residents. But I think you may solved my problem. I find it very hard to go around beggin for a place to hunt. And if we are being seen as harrassing the landowners than maybe my brothers and I will just hang it up. Oh well, we had some fun years.

Thanks to all. shocked.gif

Ufatz,

I just graduated from NDSU and hunted in ND for four years without any issues with landowners. If you go ask permission, normally the landowners will beg you to get rid of the geese and ducks. They will tell you which field the birds are landing in or which ponds they have seen the birds on. This was all within 60 miles of Fargo. They aren't as willing to allow pheasant hunters but I never had a problem with ducks.

One guy drove us around for an hour the weekend before the season started and showed us which land was his and even offered to post it for us. All it cost us was a case of his favorite beer the next weekend.
