Driver Salaries

HOF#13

Got this from a Marty Smith article on ESPN. Kind of interesting. I wondered how driver contracts were basically broken down.

"Drivers' annual salaries are broken down four ways:

Driving fee: Drivers make a flat salary just for sitting in the seat every Sunday. Upper-tier drivers are somewhere in the $4 million to $6 million range.

Percentage of winnings: Drivers and teams split the race purse winnings each week. Upper-tier drivers usually make between 40 and 45 percent of the weekly take. So if a driver wins a race and earns $1 million, roughly $450,000 is his and $550,000 goes to the organization for which he drives.

Personal services: Most drivers have personal endorsement contracts that are subsequent to the primary and secondary sponsors on their cars. Current examples are the Gillette Young Guns and Coke Racing Family programs. The deals Junior just inked with Sony and adidas are personal services deals. These can be serious cash.

Royalties: Each driver receives a percentage of sales from his merchandise. "

Also...."It stands to reason that Junior's new deal with Hendrick will rival Jeff Gordon's as the richest in the sport. Gordon is making crazy coin, in part because he has an equity stake in Hendrick Motorsports as part-owner of Jimmie Johnson's team.

Not that Junior will have equity in HMS. That's not what I'm saying. But I'm sure Mr. Hendrick has put a very unique, very lucrative package together for Earnhardt. Car dealerships, possibly? Just a guess. "
