In-line spinners

Why aren't in-line spinners more popular in MN? Like the Big-Bow spinners, Mepps, Panther Martin or Wordens? I think for river fishing they can't be beat because you can catch anything on them. We've used them with great success on lakes too - again catching multiple species of fish on one outing.

I'm just wondering why more people don't use them? Or maybe I'm mistaken and they are more popular than I think? I just don't see, hear or read about people using them that much.

If they are relatively unpopular, then it may be because of cost. They're pretty expensive.

I use them a lot, especially in river fishing. I solved the cost problem by buying a Netcraft spinner making kit, which costs about $20 plus components. Now they cost me about 50 cents each to make and they work as good as the name brands. The kit I'm referring to has a wire bending and looping tool, a spinner making manual, and some wire. They also have a table on their web site for selecting components of the correct size.

There's no real secret to using them...just cast and reel.

I'm not interested in multi-species when I go fishing. Generally I'm going for walleyes only. That's usually a more deliberate presentation than tossing a Mepps a seeing what hits it. Nothing against it, it's just not the way I fish.

i have been thinking, and the only thing i haven't caught on a spinner is a perch. i got my only flathead and my bigest northern on a size zero mepps XD spinner on an ultralite after a day of trout fishing. i use them any time there is an abundance of baitfish in shallow water. with so many sizes, you can match the baitfish at all times of the year.

Personally I like using them alot. My only complaint is they get bent easily and are hard to keep running true. I have several Mepps. My favorite is a #5 red and white. Its a northern killer.

oh, and they snag on everything. which is ok since i seem to find at least one every time i go trout fishing.

Even with a swivel they tend to twist my line
