Since alot of you guys use these reels maybe someone has a answer for me. Why does my reel make a squeeling noise when i cast?? It only does this when its cool out. In the heat of the day its fine but cool or rainy it squeels and casts fall way short. I am sure it has to do with the brake but why?? Thanks for any info.

LMAO @ RK, dude, you always put a smile on my face!

many people do not know, that water of all things is like the evil of fishing reels. One small piece of dirt or who knows what in a bearing can make a reel feel or sound like it needs to be replaced. Thats not the case. I know people who dunk thier reels in the water to lube them each trip out.. They are also the ones that need to replace them every 2-3 years.. hmmmmm.... It can be as little as just picking up a little extra dirt riding in the boat down a dirt road.. ect... dirt and bearings and gears.. not good.

I had a reel that did the same thing that the above poster talked about.. it wasnt a Curado... wasnt a shimano.. but know people who have had it happen to all makes of reel.. Anyway, I had dammaed the bearing enough(with Dirt) that it needed to be replaced... even then, it wasn't all that much to repair the reel.

My curado does the same. The spool doesnt stop though. Even after a thourough lube job it squeels and squeaks just like before within a few days. (It's probly 4 or 5 years old and has always been on my frog-rod spooled with 50lbs. power-pro.) Do you think that might be the problem? confused.gif

Hiya -

A serious answer to the question... You may have either dry, or worn out brakes in your VBS. Open the side plate, and see if there's any dirt along the rim of the brake raceway (Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol works good), then put a drop of oil on each brake. If the brakes look worn they may need replacing. It doesn't take much gunk in the wrong place to really hose up a reel built with tight tolerances.

If that doesn't solve the issue you can remove the spool, clean off the inside of the spool rims, and oil the pinion gear. Those can squeal sometimes too...

Deitz - Among the guys that I fish with, I'm not exactly famous for reel maintenance. I have a couple spare Garcia 5500s and 5000s that are backup bass reels for spinnerbaits and so on. This winter I was cleaning muskie reels (I'm a fanatic about keeping those reels working - heh), saw the bass reels on the shelf, and thought "you know, I can't remember the last time I cleaned those things..." Good lord... The inside of the palming plates were black. Tore them apart and took after them with mineral spirits and a toothbrush. Took out these little black fiber drag washers, dunked them in solvent...they were actually brass... shocked.gif By the time I got done, the little container of solvent I had was dark gray with a layer of sludge on the bottom. Even for me, it was a sad deal...

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Have the same thing going on with my Curado and thought it was just mine - got a bad one or something. I took mine apart and lubed it with Hot Sauce which seemed to work for a while then sprayed the whole deal with Reel Magic with similar results - I have also dunked it in the lake to lube it up too when it first occured.

Thanks for the fix advice...

There we go..... talking about Shimano reels again.... You guys gotta warn me first so I can have my bucket and mop ready.

Re Reel Squeak: You really need to have your reel taken apart every couple of seasons. Just like the other guys said, dirt can come into your reel during transport or use. By doing so, your reel can last a long time, I have a Shimano Curado SF and I love it. I sent it in to have it re-lubed after I got caught out in the rain several time and it was making that same noise. Trust me, it's worth it. It doesn't cost you anymore than $15.00.
