Pumping water

Scoot

Recommended Posts

Question about pumping water out of the sump in my basement: could I pump water out of there with a bilge pump? I know the answer is yes, but here's the scoop- I'd have to pump the water out through a hose that'd have to be somewhere between 50 and 60 feet long. Will a bilge pump handle pushing water that far?

The reason I ask this is because last night the electricity went out here in Fargo and I had to keep a close eye on the bilge. I was about 20 minutes away from having to start scooping it out with a bucket before the power came back on. I know about battery backup systems, and I'll have one in a couple years probably. Just wondering about a short-term fix here.

I throw a small bilge pump in a pond to wash off the ATVs up north. I have about 25 feet of hose on that and it pumps just fine, uphill. A larger bilge pump would probably work fine.

Just read the post after mine....about a 9-foot lift for me at it works.

If you are connected to city water there is a pump that that needs no electric it runs off water pressure,No batteries to worry about. If you can read directions and sweat solder you can install.I think a bilge pump would work for now as long as the lift isn't too great, the distance isn't the factor, check recomended lift on bilges.

I used my bilge pump connected to a 50 ft garden hose to drain the water off my winter cover every year. It does not come out as fast as a 3 ft bilge hose but it does work pretty good.
