Channels

Based on my outings the last few nights and coupled with reports from others, the channels are really turning on. Get some fresh cutbait, find a snag, place your bait near it and hang on!

Wow, that's great. I haven't ever caught a channel over about 14 inches long, so I'm pumped. Have to start bringing cutbait when I go out. I've been using cut bullies with no luck so far, I'll switch to carp, sheepshead, or sucker or something.

Cut bullies are a no-no. They just don't work that well at all. Channels will sometimes aggressively hit a live bully but cut bully is just not a good bait.

Stick to Suckers, Creek Chubs, Shad, or even Goldeye/Mooneye if you can catch them. Or heck, you can even go the Chicken Liver route as well.

Mr. Special has actually had pretty good luck on cut bullies, as long as it is fresh. I have never tried.

Cut carp is a no-no. It's illegal to use whole or parts of a carp as bait. I could look up the regulation, but I'm feeling too lazy right now.

The channel bite is finally getting back to what it was like for me this spring. But, I can't complain too much about the slow channel fishing with the way the flats were biting.
