beer batter
If not already, the mayflies will be hatching on many area lakes very soon. I saw a couple last weekend clinging to the grass around the lake so they'll be out in full force soon.I've had marginal luck with long snell, red hook, single red bead, piece of night crawler. Something to resemble the nymphs floating out of the mud.Anyone witness the mayflies hatching, and what have you found to work the best during a hatch? captshorelunch
Quote: what have you found to work the best during a hatch? Staying home. I have found that when there is that much prey, the walleyes will engorge on the nymphs and are less likely to take what I am offering. I have caught walleyes during hatches before. Cut them open and their guts are PACKED with mayflies and nymphs. It's tough
LBSPORTSMEN
Slip bob a leach hooked one time through the center. Fish it right over a mayfly bed from 8:30-11pm. The leach will have the same "squirm" as the larva... I love fishing during the mayfly hatch! The walleye are gorging themselves on the mayflies and everything else. palisade1kid
Great tip.I know it's tougher ,but hey I'd rather be out there trying to figure out what makes them tick then sittting at the house watching T.V.
TimC
How long does the hatch normally last? About a week or so?
palisade1kid
I know some lakes have different kinds of MF so a hatch could start & end & then another hatch could start up.So within a few weeks it's all over with.

This weekend I was caught in what the Local's called "Day One" of an EPIC mayfly hatch... I've never seen a hatch like this in my life. While I've seen Hatches shut down the Day bite, because fish are gorging at night... I think for night fishing (Which is my prefered method of chasing Walleye) That it turns up the bite... The Forage fish come out of cover and feed... Walleye come out and if they have to choose between them and puny little larva, they choose the fish everytime.Even this weekend... Moon was on the other side of the planet... So it was pitch dark, which always shuts the forage fish down more, and they hide in the weeds... The hatch brought them out... Between my buddy and I we brought into the boat:20 Rock Bass (An unfortunate consequence of a May Fly Hatch)3 Walleye2 Pike (One of which was a MULE)2 Smallies... And during the day portion we even saw 3 Musky Follows.
Bassboy1645
hmm Big fan of fish when I can so I noticed that downsizing tackle and fishing slow and finesses is key. Lindy rigs have been hot latley in the ely area and bobbers are good too. Or break the "rules" and throw cranks. Fish love something different every now and then. harvey lee
Fish Mille lacs today and the mayfly were so thick, you could get a false bottom reading. We did very well on nicer slots and caught some nice pigs also. Probably 20+ eye's in the morning. Not to bad for a mayfly hatch.
