1987 mariner 45hp??????

Recommended Posts

hello fellas I bought a 1987 bass tracker with a 1987 mariner 45hp motor and the boat and motor have been sitting for 4 years. I went to start up the motor in a water tank to see how it was going to run and it fired up but I notice there was no water coming out so I ran it for about 1 min and shut it off do I have a bad water pump? is there a thermostat in it? or can mice get in there? your advice is greatly appresiated thanks SNK

I owned that exact model motor for over 10 years. It should kick water out the discharge a few seconds after you start it. If mine had a thermostat, it was stuck open. You probably need an impeller.

Around here they charge form $ 100 to $ 200 depending on motor size (not much difference anyway), the water pump kit (with impeller, gaskets, wear plates, etc) should cost around $ 45, the impeller itself about $ 20.00

Impeller might cost a tad more if the outboard is the Japanese version that was first made by Mariner when they came out. I have an 88 40hp Mariner I changed out the impeller a few years ago and we had to special order. If the engine has sat for awhile you might also have an air lock. But that will clear when you install a new impeller. Good to do for piece of mind.

If you guys don't mind me stealing the thread a bit but just last night my stream was plugged with some weeds etc. and with just a fish hook or stick I got it unlodged. But I have noticed it could be a little stronger. Plus I have had the boat for about 6+ years and I don't think the impeller has been replaced.

So my question is how do you replace one and where do you start? It's a 92 Mariner 115hp?

thanks,

If you go and get the part, ask them to print out a schematic, I am sure they will, our dealer did for us. The first time you do it, it might be tricky, but after that it will be a piece of cake. An extra set of hands helps tons, so keep them handy wink.gif

Be sure to test it after doing it, as my first time I did not get the tube into the right opening, and had to try again.
