rainylakefisher
Early 90's Johnson 60 HP starts and runs fine when cold. Runs fine until shut off, but then won't start again when warm. Any ideas of where to start?? Need it for a trip next weekend so I'm hoping for an easy fix. Please help!!
0 marine_man
Any more details? It never starts? Does it smell like gas like it's getting flooded? This is a tough one to diagnose until you can repeat the problem - but what I would do the next time it happens is to check the spark on your cylinders. I'm wondering if one of the power packs is on it's way out and it shorts out when it's hot, but not when the engine is cold.I presume the motor runs fine (idles good, runs at WOT good, etc) the rest of the time?marine_man
0 upnorth
I had the same issue on an "87" 70 horse evinrude, would start fine cold and would start OK if I started it back up within say 15 minutes but any longer than that it took forever and at ton of cranking to get it going. Played around with a few things for a few months and finally someone on this board sugguested the that the floats on one or more of the carbs may be sticking somewhat open and flooding the cylinder. Bought the kits and rebuilt the carbs. One carb was so gummed up and cruddy I was amazed it was working at all, one of the others was a little dirty too. To make a long story short it starts cold, warm and in between now.
0 fishingdad
rainlylakefisher, I had a 89' 60 hp johnson that would do that exact thing and also would bog down when going from trolling or idle to taking off to get on plane. And like was stated check your carbs and spark. And also I beleive if you pull the hood off and look on the left side of the engine there should be a red plastic lever. That is the manual choke I know I had to turn(flip) that lever the other direction from where it was at and it would start and then flipped it back to its original position after it started. For whatever reason the choke would come on when warm and then moving the lever would take it off and would stay off when the lever was put back to its original position after starting. Give it a shot and see if it helps. Good Luck I know it was aggravating
