Bear color

Just a question about the color phases- In MN do some bears change from cinamon to black or do they stay cinamon all their lives- is this even possible- I ask because my guide said that he has a 400# cinamon in the area and just wanted to know if he stays that color all year or he is that color now and will be black come september. Thanks

About 6% of the Minnesota bear harvest is made up of brown colored bears (based on hunter surveys). I don't have any weight data but about 5% of the harvest is made up of 10+ year old males. So, the odds of shooting a cinammon that is also over 10 years old is about 0.3%. Pretty long indeed ...

Since you're asking about color phase bears, here's a big cinnamon I shot about 10 years ago. Not in Minnesota, it was in Saskatchewan. The outfitter was estimating 500 lbs (of course) but it was never weighed.

Hope you enjoy the pics, and good luck this fall.
