Bent Boat Trailer Axel

One trailer tire on my boat has been wearing excessively on the inside (I have gone through 2 tires in 2 years and the 3rd one is warn pretty bad already). We looked at the trailer this weekend and it appears that the one spindle is bent slightly upward, causing the inside of the tire to wear.

The trailer is a 1999 Shorelander 3100# (model R2031B) under an 1999 Lund Tyee 1850 with 150hp Optimax.

I am heading to Kabetogama on Fathers Day weekend and don't want to deal with tire issues.

I'm looking for suggestions.

WR, Take it into a good alingment shop, they should be able to find the problem and correct it. The axles take a good beating under our boats (especially on MN highways) and it really doesn't take a whole lot to knock them out of spec. Sometimes it's just a matter of some shims other times the "heat wrench" is needed. Just talk to a shop you trust. Phred52

I agree, have the spindle straightened or even cut/ground off and a new one welded in.

I just had to have a new axle put in my 3 year old Yaht Club trailer. It was wearing the dump out of the inner 2" of my tires. Went through a set in about 3 months.

Good news was Yaht Club and RJ's in Duluth took care of me free of charge. Needless to say I was quite surprised and happy with that.

Some times no matter what you need a new staright axle or tweeking the spindles/hubs will only be a short time cure.

I had this same type of problem. For 2 years, I went through about 4 tires until I finally figured out the problem. When we brought it to a dealer to get a tire replaced, they actually put on a different size rim which in turn made the tire run uneven and would bubble and pop shortly after getting new ones. So what I'm trying to say is, make sure the rims are the exact same size and the tires are the exact same tires. Start at the cheapest repairs before getting things aligned.

Ive been dealing with spindle problems also.But the good news is a brand new 3500LB axel only cost me 80 bucks at Radco Iron and Supply.
