drift socks

Fish&Fowl

Question

Anybody have any beef with any brands of drift socks or are they all pretty much the same? Me and the old man watched some guys using one while jigging today in about 4 ft. rollers and it looked like it was working great. I'm thinking about getting one for a b-day gift so any tips appreciated.

I have a driftmaster drift sock that is about 10 years old and it works great, but can be a pain to deploy --- the straps twist sometimes, the bag wants to go inside out sometimes --- once you get it deployed it's awesome.

I also have a cabelas brand, it's smaller and I don't use it as much, but I really like it and it deploys like a dream. Seems like the straps, float, and weight design is better than in my older sock.

I have a Driftmaster and a Minnekota. The Driftmaster is better than the Minnekota for deploying. So after reading perch's maybe that means that one needs to get the cabela's model.

Wave Tamer or Drift Control for sure... Wave Tamers are a bit easier for deployment, but the Drift Controls are just as good in my opinion... Have three socks I carry in the boat for different applications...

Lindy has a lot of good info on their HSOforum about drift socks... If you go to their homepage, scroll down until you see the Fishing Tips link, click on that and click on the Drift Control Tips link...

Socks will definately help you boat more fish!!!

WORD OF ADVICE --

any time you fish drift socks with someone who has never done it before - take the time to teach them how to manuver around them and what it takes to get them out of the way. Had to learn the hard way when i spent opener one year losing fish after fish because nobody realized that they were in the water... mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

I have two driftmaster socks, one that is ten years old and a new one. They have changed the design on the new one it is a permanent funnel shape and when you pull it in you pull the back end in first, which dumps the water out of it. the old one has a rope that controls the bottom end and you are supposed to open it and let the water out when you pull it in. That old design always seems to end up inside out. I would definitly buy the funnel shaped one over the other design
