tcumd
Me and my dad drew a tag for zone 62 (first time applying) and we will be hunting out of the sawbill landing. Any info or stories about moose in this zone would be appreciated. Thanks
kurtkwe
Congrats, I was in your zone last fall with a friend who had a permit. We hunted out of Homer Lake, paddling into Vern lake which had a fire in 1999 and is an excellent spot to hunt. I have been on Sawbill many times and have never seen a moose on this lake though I have seen moose on Kelso lake which is only one short portage in. I have also hunted on the western border of this zone going in at Kawishiwi Lake and paddling up to Kawashong Lake. We saw many moose in this area. All three of these choices are relatively easy moose hunts, at least for the BWCA, as far as getting your moose out. I would recommend either Kawishiwi or Vern as the best areas. If you want you can even stay at the campground at Kawishiwi and make day trips. Check on water levels however, as the river up to Kashawong can be tough to navigate if the water is down and you have a moose in the canoe on the way out. Vern also has a tough portage if the water is down though it is very short. We took a moose out of Vern in one load starting at 9:00am and were to the truck by 11:30am. All of the trees on Vern are probably around 15' or so and most are aspen, it is ideal moose country. Kawishiwi is really low and swampy with more mature pines with moose browse mainly along the water ways. Vern has a very nice campsite on the west shore and another just south of the portage. Kashawong has a nice site on the north side of the lake near the portage to the Polly Lake. If you have further questions I would be happy to assist in any way. sticknstring
Good luck to both groups who will be hunting in 62! We put in for 62 but didn't get drawn. I've been on a few BWCA trips out of Sawbill the past few years and have seen moose each trip - last year a very nice bull on Zenith lake before the dreaded Lujenida portage. Keep us posted!
