I/O engin issue

I've got a 1999 Alpha 1 Mercruser V8. It starts fine and idles fine and runs fine at about 3/4 throttle. When I open her up all the way it sputters and the engine wants to die. As soon as I throttle it back it runs fine again. Any thoughts as to what the issues could be?

Is this carb or EFI? If it is carbed it sounds like it is running the carb out of fuel. I rebuilt the carb on my OMC 4.3L V6 and had to make a minor adjustment to the float in the bowl after I rebuilt the carb.

I would start by checking the fuel lines and filter. It could just be starving for gas.

Definitely sound like it is starving. Do you have a water separating fuel filter? the kind that spins on and looks like an oil filter? Good place to start.

Classic example of starving for gas.

Check, no forget that, replace the fuel filter. Then check your gas lines, its tough to find a air leak. Tighten the hose clamps from tank to fuel pump.
